Tommy Lee Jones hated working with Jim Carrey during ‘Batman Forever’ filming

While working on Batman Forever, Tommy Lee Jones hated Jim Carrey so much that the Oscar winner shook when he told the comic how much he despised him.

During a recent appearance on Norm Macdonald Live, Carrey told the host about how he and Jones happened to be at the same restaurant while filming Batman Forever.

“The maitre said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner’,” Carrey recalled. “I went over and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face.

“He got up shaking – he must have been in mid ‘kill me’ fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you’.

“And I said, ‘What’s the problem?’ and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery’… I was the star and that was the problem. He’s a phenomenal actor, though. I still love him,” said Carrey.

To be fair to Tommy Lee Jones, watching Jim Carrey in that era up close and personal, running ninety all day, would test anyone’s patience. Especially when you consider that Tommy Lee Jones spent years perfecting his skills as an actor while Carrey erupted as an international sensation in a short period of time with Ace Ventura.

Jones’ rage, according to Macdonald, may have originated from Carrey’s strength and ability to catch the attention of whatever room he stepped into.

Carrey responded, “He might have been uncomfortable doing that work, too. That’s not really his style of stuff.”

The two actors haven’t worked together since, and despite the fact that their bodies of work are usually vastly different, as Jim Carrey pointed out, I can’t help but wonder if Tommy Lee Jones has ever shied away from a project simply because Carrey might be involved. If Jones couldn’t stand such “buffoonery” in one film, you can guarantee he wouldn’t like it if he had to go through it again.
