Matt Lauer’s sexist Anne Hathaway interview resurfaces

Since the news of Matt Lauer’s alleged sexual misconduct and subsequent removal from the Today Show surfaced on Wednesday morning, the Internet has been scouring old interviews and appearances for any remarks made by or about Lauer that would hint at his alleged history of misbehavior. A Today Show parody piece in which Lauer mocked victims of workplace sexual assault and a clip from a Watch What Happens Live interview in which Katie Couric claimed that her former coworker “pinches me on the ass a lot” are among the cringe-worthy pieces that have already emerged.

On Wednesday, a new Today Show clip surfaced, showing Lauer making improper comments to an interviewee.

Lauer had other, more serious concerns to address with Anne Hathaway in a 2012 Today Show interview, while she was promoting what would eventually be her Oscar-winning performance in Les Misérables. The paparazzi’s horrible habit of photographing unsuspecting female celebrities exiting automobiles had become a disgusting sport for them, and Hathaway had just fallen victim to it. Photographs showing Hathaway exiting an SUV without her underpants were widely circulated, and she was believed to be ashamed and distraught by the occurrence.

When Hathaway sat down with Lauer to talk about her film, he seemed to criticize her for being a victim of having personal photographs of her body released without her consent. “Good to see you… seen a lot of you lately,” Lauer stated as he greeted her.

Hathaway tries to play it off as if he’s talking about her over-saturated press cycle, flashing a determined movie star grin and stating, “I’d be happy to stay at home, but the film.”

However, Lauer isn’t going to stop questioning her about the paparazzi photo that allegedly shows a peek of Hathaway’s private bits. “Let’s just get it out of the way,” he added, raising his eyebrows in a provocative manner. “You had a little wardrobe malfunction the other night.”

Hathaway’s retort is exceptionally elegant. She explains, “It was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that when we live in an age where someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis.”

The video has been posted on Twitter by a number of people. One person said, “Somewhere Anne Hathaway is asking ‘What lesson did you learn, Matt Lauer?'”

Another user added, “and another thing: I have been majorly grossed out by Matt Lauer ever since his interview with Anne Hathaway where instead of asking about her Oscar win all he did was make jokes about a paparazzi pic of up her skirt when she was getting out of a car so BYE IDIOT”

“Wait, the guy who said, “Seen a lot of you lately” to Anne Hathaway after some creep snapped an upskirt photo of her was sexually inappropriate in the workplace? #today #mattlauerfired,” wrote another.
