In a couple of seconds, you can go from high to low. Jennifer Lawrence suffered a tumble on her way up to the platform to accept her Oscar for Best Actress shortly after winning the award. Hugh Jackman, star of “Les Miserables,” leapt to his feet to rescue her when she tripped going up the stairs in “The Silver Linings Playbook.”

The 22-year-old actress, who won for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, was seen briefly hanging her head in her hands after her voluminous strapless Dior Haute Couture gown caused the accident on the steps.

Lawrence plays Tiffany in the film, a widow with an unusual personality who establishes an unexpected relationship with Bradley Cooper’s character.

Winning an Oscar for Best Actress is without a doubt the pinnacle of any celebrity’s career.

Joan Rivers asserted that she “tripped over her own ego.”

“You are standing up because you’re feeling bad that I fell, and that’s embarrassing,” the 22-year-old actress remarked, accepting the standing ovation from her colleagues after eventually getting to the podium.

Lawrence accepted her Oscar from The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin and then acknowledged her rivals: Jessica Chastain from Zero Dark Thirty, Naomi Watts from The Impossible, Emmanuelle Riva from Amour, and Quvenzhane Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild. Lawrence remarked, “You were so magnificent, and it’s been so amazing getting to know you; you’ve made this experience unforgettable.”

When asked what happened backstage, Lawrence replied, “What do you mean, what happened? Look at my dress. I tried to walk up stairs in this dress. That’s what happened. I think I just stepped on the fabric and they waxed the stairs.”

Lawrence was dressed in a full-skirted strapless Dior Haute Couture gown with a long train.

Jennifer’s Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper and X-Men: First Class co-star Hugh Jackman were both seen running to her aid, but Jennifer was quick to rectify the situation, rejecting any help as she pulled herself up and continued to receive the prize.

“I was at the Oscars, waiting to hear if my name was called, and I kept thinking, cakewalk, cakewalk, cakewalk,” Jennifer Lawrence told W Magazine.

“I thought, ‘Why is ‘cakewalk’ stuck in my head?’

“And then, as I started to walk up the stairs and the fabric from my dress tucked under my feet, I realised my stylist had told me, ‘Kick, walk, kick, walk’.

“You are supposed to kick the dress out while you walk, and I totally forgot because I was thinking about cake! And that’s why I fell.”

This isn’t the first time the actress has messed up at an award event; last month, the lining of her blue Dior gown was exposed when she stepped up to accept her SAG Award.

Dior revealed that the gown was constructed in stages, with Jennifer merely hitching off the top layer to show her legs.

What was going through her mind when she fell? “A bad word that I can’t say that starts with ‘F,’” she told the Academy backstage.

The new Miss Dior face revealed that she had really trimmed six inches off the train of the dress before the event.

‘It would have been too insane,’ Jennifer said on the red carpet to Ryan Seacrest.

Lawrence will most certainly be trying to push the picture of gateau to the back of her mind throughout awards season this year, especially now that it has been confirmed that she will be one of the hosts for the 2014 Golden Globes.

Lawrence recently made news when she stated that it should be “illegal to call someone fat on TV.”

Joan Rivers, who has often chastised Lawrence for comments she made about her celebrity program Fashion Police!, responded to the jab by calling Lawrence a hypocrite who had been “touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican.”
