Tom Hanks has enjoyed a successful acting career spanning over 45 years, and with his latest film now in theaters, fans are curious about his retirement plans.

His most recent movie, A Man Called Otto, was released on January 13. Hanks portrays Otto Anderson, a grumpy elderly widower whose life changes when a young family becomes his new neighbors.

Seeing Hanks as an elderly widower may have reminded fans and the industry of the actor’s longevity and age, prompting questions about his retirement at the New York premiere of A Man Called Otto.

“I have no intention [of retiring],” Hanks shared with Variety at the premiere.

“I’m not just working for the sake of it. I’m fortunate to be in this position. It has to be extraordinary.”

“Rita and I discuss this all the time – there are only two reasons to work: it will be good, or it will be enjoyable.”

“If it’s neither, I’ll stay home until something better comes along. I don’t need to do anything.”

According to Hanks himself, he has no plans to retire in the near future.

The Forrest Gump star has another movie set for release later this year, titled Asteroid City.

The film explores a series of intriguing events in 1955 that alter life as it was known.

Asteroid City is set in a fictional American desert town around 1955.
