A year after his parents, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, were hospitalized with severe episodes of Covid-19, Chet Hanks posted a tirade against coronavirus vaccinations and advised victims of the virus to “get over it.”

Chet referred to COVID-19 as “the flu” in an Instagram video posted on Monday, after first purporting to be alerting followers that he had received the vaccination.

“I’ve been kind of on the fence about this for a while. That’s why I never spoke on it, but with the amount of people I know recently who have gotten Covid and with the numbers rising, I think it’s important for me to say I got the vaccine,” he said.

“I think everyone should. I think it’s really important that we all do this just as citizens, as Americans, we have to look after each other and get this [situation] under control, guys,” he added.

Then Hanks, who is known for flashing his middle fingers on social media, shouts, “PSYCH!” and launches into an anti-vax tirade.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I never had COVID. Y’all ain’t sticking me with that motherfucking needle,” he says. “It’s the motherfucking flu. Get over it, OK? If you’re sick, stay inside. OK, why we working around y’all? If you’re in danger, stay your ass inside. I’m tired of wearing a motherfucking mask.”

Later that evening, Chet doubled down, saying on his Instagram account, “The vaccine should be a choice not a requirement to perform our basic rights yeah I said it !!!!! Be as mad as you want IDGAF !!!!””

The Empire and Shameless actor’s views on the vaccination have been diametrically opposite his parents’.

At the outset of the epidemic, Tom Hanks and Owen Wilson were among the first Hollywood actors to announce they had caught the coronavirus. The Oscar winner, who was at the time filming Baz Luhrmann’s currently untitled Elvis Presley film, wrote on Instagram in March 2020 that he and Wilson had “felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches,” with her experiencing chills and both having slight fevers before being tested and confirming they had COVID while in Australia. Wilson had performed at the Sydney Opera House and was on tour for her new album, “Halfway to Home,” when the two started experiencing symptoms.

Tom Hanks said in an interview with The National Defense Radio Show that his wife had a “tougher time” than he did.

“She had a much higher fever and she had some other symptoms. She lost her sense of taste and smell. She got absolutely no joy from food for a better part of three weeks,” Hanks said.

According to Tom Hanks’ post, the two were “tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires.” Tom Hanks emphasized that he and Wilson were isolated and that it was critical to heed medical experts’ recommendations. “There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. We are taking it one-day-at-a-time. There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no?”

The Covid-19 vaccinations, which have been authorized in the United States, have been shown to be both safe and effective, with real-world data from throughout the world indicating that the injections are decreasing transmission and lowering the risk of hospitalization and death.
