Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated that he is still keen to create the third Conan film, but that it is being delayed owing to rights complications.

Conan the Destroyer ended with a hint for a third Conan film featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but we never saw it.

“It’s a movie that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Let’s do it.”

The 71-year-old actor rose to prominence as the prehistoric warrior in the popular 1982 fantasy film Conan the Barbarian, which he repeated in 1984’s Conan the Destroyer.

Both films were based on stories about the titular figure written by Robert E. Howard.

Schwarzenegger has addressed why the Conan project has been dormant for so long; it appears that those attempting to create the picture do not have the necessary rights. Conan the Barbarian himself explains…

‘The sad stuff about all of this is when there’s an estate like this, The Robert E. Howard estate … when someone buys these rights, those people now own the rights and they have their own vision of what they want to do,’ he told the website TheArnoldFans.com.

‘We have been trying to convince him for years now that the way to go is to come back and hire a really great director and to do another Conan movie. It’s really not that far from creating a finished script.

‘The only one who really has to pull the trigger there is the people who own the Conan rights to do a movie.

‘Let’s go to Netflix or whoever it is, let’s hire a director who’s very creative and can elevate the project to make it a winning project. I hope it will be done very soon because I think it’s a great idea.’

In 1982’s Conan the Barbarian, Arnold Schwarzenegger played the part for the first time. Conan the Destroyer followed in 1984, and at that time, his career had taken off owing to The Terminator. As a result, that edition of the franchise has sat unused. But now that he’s almost finished with Terminator 6 and has recovered from his heart attack, he might be able to pull it off.

The sequel’s script is nearly complete, but the Hollywood actor is unable to move through with the production due to a legal dispute with the Howard estate for the rights to Conan.
