Kate, William’s YouTube Channel Sparks Meghan, Harry Comparisons: Sussex content feels like ‘ads’


According to a brand expert, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have’refreshed’ their digital strategy by revamping their Instagram and launching a YouTube channel in order to build a ‘warm and inviting’ profile.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge launched their YouTube channel on Wednesday, expanding their social networking reach. It’s gaining popularity fast, and has received overwhelmingly favorable feedback online, with one analyst labeling the channel and their other social networking pages as “a really lovely glimpse into the lives of our future king and queen.”

Prince William, 38, and Kate Middleton, 39, have revised their profile photo and modified their username from ‘Kensington Royal’ to the more casual ‘Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.’

In addition, the pair shared a 25-second video of them greeting royal supporters.

“Be careful what you say now, because these guys are here filming everything.” William says, pointing at the lens.

Kate laughs and says, “I know”


The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge “have embarked on a rebranding” according to commentator Duncan Larcombe, as they seek to ensure the Firm’s longevity in the modern era.

Mr Larcombe told the Sun, “I honestly think they have embarked on a rebranding in the light of what effectively the importance of personality as well as position for the royals.”

“Harry and Meghan have shown that modern royalty will only survive if it is absolutely at the cutting edge of social media that their profiles play into the narrative of the cult of the celebrity.

“William has decided now is really the time to really push them as a couple as well as the future king and queen.”

The pair have opened a YouTube channel only days after sharing an intimate family video with their children Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, showing them spending time at the beach.

Less than 24 hours since its launch, the Cambridges’ YouTube channel has more than 1.1 million subscribers. And t hey have a total of 12.8 million fans on Instagram.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s digital output has changed, giving a ‘a really lovely glimpse into the lives of our future King and Queen’, whilst the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s digital output is ‘very brand heavy and personality light’ with material that sounds like ‘advertising,’ according to brand analyst Nick Ede.

”I think that its really refreshing to see the new digital approach that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made,’ Nick said.

‘They know they the need to keep up with the relentless developments and use of social media.

‘Their use of imagery and YouTube and all social channels is warm and inviting and gives us a really lovely glimpse into their lives.

‘It allows us to see how our future king and queen interact with each other, their children, their dog and so on.’

‘They are still revealing the traditional sides of the royal family which is something we all love to see but by stepping up their game in talking to the public via Twitter, Instagram and Youtube,’ he added.

‘They are allowing us to know they care about us and the things that matter to those around us, as well as themselves and their own family.’

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, according to Nick, are vastly different.

‘Kate and Will’s channels are in stark contrast to those created by the team behind the Sussex brand,’ Nick clarified.

‘The Sussexes have gone for commercial partnerships which are very brand heavy and personality light.

‘They are more about using the huge platforms of Netflix, Apple + and Spotify to get their messages across to millions of people but in a far more slick way, that often feel like adverts rather than from the heart.’

Since leaving their roles as senior royals, Harry and Meghan have consistently outperformed other members of the monarchy in terms of media attention.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have had to ramp up creating a brand independent from the Firm in the last year in order to land multi-million pound agreements with Netflix and Spotify.

Some Twitter users, though, also criticized the perceived “double standards” in the reception of Middleton and Prince William’s YouTube release compared to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s films, whilst others have characterized the launch as a “damage control.” tactic.


“it’s gross knowing that if harry and meghan did this, people would be burning down buildings, but when these two do it they’re praised,” one said, while another wondered, “Why is it good for them but not for the Sussexes?”

“Imagine the outrage if Meghan and Harry announced they were going to be on Youtube. Is that not too ‘celebrity’ or ‘Hollywood’ I can’t deal with the double standards,” a third person said.

“Wow, they’re doing everything Harry & Meghan were successfully doing a few years ago & were told to sit down. Now Charles & William are trying to catch up. They just don’t have the charisma, especially Charles & Camila,” another commented.

“Lol the rebrand. I’m sure they definitely said that s–t. Meg and Harry were telling the truth,” another added.

However, supporters of Prince William and Kate Middleton defended the royal couple’s decision to enter YouTube, saying that they are doing it correctly.

“This is how you balance Royal life with domestic life. Perfect to lead our great nation. H and Princess Hollywood can stay where they are. We don’t need you or want you. This here is loyalty, honor and service,” one Twitter user said.

“Loving it. H & M are a disgrace. This is how you serve, the Sussex’s serve themselves. We don’t want to be part of the Firm but we will use our titles. Zara and Mike serve with no titles @Olympics @ParkinsonsUK”

“I can’t wait to watch your videos there!! I love you two and your adorable kids so much I’m very proud to be team Cambridge,” a third royal supporter said.

“Now this is how you do it. Markle should watch and learn. Oh that’s right, she did and didn’t like it!!” another person added to the conversation.

“Now here’s what the making of a modern royal family is all about!” a fifth netizen exclaimed.
