While Marilyn Monroe is remembered as one of the most iconic sex symbols of all time, she was a complicated and tormented woman behind her flawless curves and seductive demeanor.
More than that, scientific journalist Claudia Kalb believes the legendary actress suffered from borderline personality disorder.
Marilyn Monroe died on the night of August 4, 1962, after a life marked by melancholy, failed marriages, miscarriages, extensive prescription drug usage, and a personal sadness that the world would not see under the dazzling veneer. She brought it to a close with her own hand.
The actress swept the globe and captivated many hearts and minds. Her personality and attentiveness were left in the shadows as her enticing voice and undeniably incredibly stunning figure drew the most of the focus. Without ever inquiring more about her, the whole world welcomed her figure and excellent looks. Marilyn most certainly suffered from borderline personality disorder, a mental ailment, according to Kalb.
While Monroe ‘yearned for love and stability,’ she ‘often lashed out at those she cared about,’ Kalb writes in a new book that investigates the psychological disorders endured by legendary celebrities and creatives after their deaths.
‘What is clear is that Monroe suffered from severe mental distress,’ she says. ‘Her symptoms included a feeling of emptiness, a split or confused identity, extreme emotional volatility, unstable relationships, and an impulsivity that drove her to drug addiction and suicide — all textbook characteristics of a condition called borderline personality disorder.’

People have worked tirelessly in the years since Marilyn’s suicide to gain a better understanding of her complicated personality and apparent inner strife. People who worked with her left signs that she had a complicated personality and an unpredictable love life, to put it mildly. Marilyn was clearly suffering from severe mental illness, as seen by her behavior.
‘My goal was to really put a human face on some of these conditions that we read about and hear about, which can be very complex,’ Kalb tells the Huffington Post.
‘I wanted to humanize mental illness and explore it in a way that allows people who are interested — or thinking about family members or themselves — to learn more in an accessible way.’
Kalb also investigated Albert Einstein, probably the greatest scientist of all time. According to Kalb, Einstein most certainly had Asperger’s Syndrome. It was virtually impossible to deny that he was on the autistic spectrum after studying his childhood and adult life. Asperger’s syndrome is a developmental disease marked by social awkwardness and a strong desire to pursue a single hobby. Simon Baron-Cohen, an autism researcher, came to the conclusion that there is a correlation between scientific talent and the Asperger’s end of the spectrum.
She told the Huffington Post that the scientist showed “childhood characteristics of late talking, social isolation, and being frequently “in his head” and absorbed by thoughts.”
‘He said that it’s possible Einstein would fit into the Asperger’s end of the autism spectrum,’ she said.
‘He also said that there seems to be a connection between this end of autism and scientific genius.’
Suicide is frequently linked to depression, which is a relatively prevalent ailment. Individuals’ levels of depression can range from mild to severe, including Major Depressive Disorder and depressive periods linked with Bipolar Disorder. It is commonly known that mental illness ran in Marilyn Monroe’s family, particularly among her female relatives. Monroe’s mother spent the majority of her life in a mental facility.
According to the Archives of General Psychiatry, recent study suggests that Affective (or mood) Disorders are hereditary and run in families. Marilyn may have inherited a milder version of the mental illness that her mother, Gladys Baker, suffered from.
Dr. Ralph Greenson, Marilyn’s psychiatrist at the time of her death, is claimed to have told colleagues that he thought she was schizophrenic. Marilyn seemed to have “two people inside her,” according to reports. If Marilyn had a personality disorder that caused her to have two personalities, it’s conceivable that one of them drove her to commit suicide in order to kill the other. In other words, Marilyn may have been slain by Norma Jeane.
Marilyn was subjected to extensive mental assessment throughout the course of the last seven years of her life, and she grew increasingly reliant on her psychiatrist, Dr Ralph Greenson, in the final months of her life. She even saw him on her deathbed, at her request, on the last day of her life. He was so concerned about her that he asked the housekeeper, Eunice Murray, to stay the night.
Marilyn, born Norma Jeane Mortenson, had 12 sets of foster parents, and she was cited as remarking in her last interview that she was “never used to being happy, so it wasn’t something she ever took for granted” in a broadcast at the time.
Since her debut in 1950, the adored actress has appeared in 23 films, grossing a total of $200 million.
However, she suffered from pre-performance nervousness, which made her physically unwell at times and was frequently the source of her renowned tardiness on set.
‘The golden girl received 5,000 fan letters a week and to those fans she never let any of her personal problems dim her screen glamour,’ said a news report at the time of her death.
