The actor has finally won an Oscar for his portrayal in The Revenant, after 27 years in Hollywood, six nominations, one digested bison liver, innumerable interviews about said bison liver, and one violent bear assault. Presenter Julianne Moore, who won best actress at last year’s Oscars, took her time announcing DiCaprio’s name, as if to try if she could make time stand still for a little moment in anticipation.

He was named best actor at the 88th Academy Awards, and Brie Larson was named best actress for her role in Room.

After winning a Golden Globe and a Bafta for his performance, the 41-year-old actor was the clear favorite to win. The actual story of Hugh Glass, who struggled his way through the wilderness after being left for dead, is told in the film, which received a number of accolades at this year’s festival.

When DiCaprio arrived on stage, he received a standing ovation and said, “Thank you to all of you in this room.” The actor expressed gratitude to his “brother” in the project, Tom Hardy, as well as director Alejandro González Iárritu and regular collaborator Martin Scorsese, for teaching him the craft of filmmaking. “None of this would be possible without you,” he told his parents, who were in the crowd. DiCaprio, an outspoken environmentalist, also used his time on stage to point out that 2015 was the hottest year on record, adding, “Climate change is real. We need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. . . For our children’s children. . . Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take this night for granted.”

Finally, it’s time to ditch those annoying ‘Poor Leo’ memes and irresistible flash games. It’s the end of an era in some respects, the loss of one of the Academy Awards’ most legendary jokes.

Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, Matt Damon for The Martian, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl are among the other candidates, who may or may not have bothered to compose acceptance speeches. Now that Leo’s quest is over, it’s time to move on to the next constantly overlooked star to memeify.

DiCaprio has a variety of projects in the works, but has yet to decide on his next position. He’s working on a real narrative about serial murderer HH Holmes with Martin Scorsese, and he’s also producing a film on the Volkswagen emissions crisis.
