After two years of dating, Nick Jonas and his girlfriend Olivia Culpo have allegedly broken up. A source corroborated the reports, telling E! Online that the couple’s decision to divorce was based on their inability to maintain a long-distance relationship.

“This has been a sensitive matter and both of them still love and care about each other and only want the best for one another,” the source revealed. “The long distance and ups and downs have been weighing on the two of them lately and it has not been easy but they know this is the best decision for them at this time.”

Nick and Olivia began dating in August 2013, after meeting at the 2013 Miss USA pageant. The former couple has been the subject of recent rumors of a breakup, especially since they haven’t been seen together since the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on May 17.

According to Hollywood Life, “It all started to go downhill after the Billboard Music Awards,” “It’s actually quite ironic, but Olivia started to get increasingly jealous over the amount of girls who were hitting on Nick and it just got to be too much.”

“Ultimately, Nick ended it and broke up with her. Olivia is also busy with her own career right now, whereas she used to travel with him all the time everywhere, so differing schedules and distance also played a part in the breakup,” the source close to Nick Jonas and Olivia Culpo reportedly added.

According to a source close to Culpo, the relationship has been difficult for a while. The former beauty queen tweeted a mysterious message on Sunday, June 14, which might be a clue to her relationship troubles. “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did,” she said, quoting Maya Angelou. “But people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Nick revealed to PEOPLE how to make his relationship with Olivia work while on tour, and the newest breakup news came only days after. The musician told the outlet, “It’s just about trying to take it one step at a time,” “I think that the long distance thing can be tough, but … try to stay in communication, keep it transparent and honest, and it should be okay.”

Whether kissing on the set of a music video, going on trips together, or attending friends’ weddings, this couple made it an effort to stay connected despite their hectic schedules.

In an interview with ABC News, Jonas said, “The long distance is tough and dealing with that is always interesting, but it’s all good. You know, we’re both busy and young and enjoying life, and it’s going well.”

Jonas, 22, wrote his hit track “Jealous,” particularly for Culpo during the couple’s better days, and she subsequently appeared in his music video. Last November, Jonas told Wendy Williams, “We went out one night and this guy was looking at her for a little too long. It was uncomfortable. I’m not a jealous person and this was an experience that I was one or two drinks in. I really got into it and then I decided to let me just process this a different way and go into the studio and write this song.”

The ex-couple are said to be working on separate projects, with Olivia flying across the world for modeling jobs and Nick gearing up for a fall tour with American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.
