Giuliana Rancic said Zendaya’s dreadlocks smell like “weed”
Zendaya Coleman blasted Giuliana Rancic, the host of E!’s Fashion Police, after her comments about the actress’ haircut went viral Monday night. Rancic said that Coleman’s outfit at the 2015 Academy Awards, particularly her hair, made her think “smells like patchouli oil” or “weed.”
Zendaya responded with a long tweet, calling the statement “outrageously offensive.”
“There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair,” she wrote.
“My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
“I was referring to a bohemian chic look,” Rancic said on Twitter.
“Dear @Zendaya,” Rancic wrote. “I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!

Rancic said on Monday that she wanted to “address something that is weighing heavily on my heart” to E! viewers.
She said: “I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line. I didn’t intend to hurt anybody but I have learned it is not my intent that matters. I am so sincerely sorry.
“This really has been a learning experience for me. This incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes. How much damage they can do.”
“I’d really like to address something that is weighing very heavy on my heart,” Rancic said on the E! show Tuesday night. “Something I said last night did cross the line. I want to say to Zendaya and anyone else out there that I have hurt that I am so, so sincerely sorry.”

Kelly Osbourne, who co-stars with Rancic on Fashion Police, clarified on Twitter that she is a friend of Zendaya and distanced herself from the remark.
“I WILL NOT BE DRAGED INTO THIS! The situation is being rectified like ADULTS by both parties. I hope you can leave it to them & do the same!
“Im giving everyone involved 24 hours to make it right or the world will hear how I really feel. contactually Im not allowed to speak!”
She added: “I DID NOT MAKE THE WEED COMENT. I DO NOT CONDONE RACISM SO AS A RSULT OF THIS IM SEREIOULSY QUESTIONONIG STAYING ON THE SHOW!”
Many people on Twitter chastised Rancic for recently complimenting Kylie Jenner’s dreadlocks while mocking Zendaya’s.
“How come @KylieJenner dread locks were edgy? And @Zendaya dread locks smelled like weed? @GiulianaRancic ???,” one Twitter user said.
