True Story, Netflix’s new limited series starring Kevin Hart (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Wesley Snipes (Blade), has debuted its official trailer. True Story will follow a comedian named Kid (Hart) as he visits his birthplace of Philadelphia for gigs and tries to reconcile with his elder brother, Carlton (Snipes). Upon his very first night back in town, things go haywire for Kid and threaten to take down the life that he has established as he is tested both ethically and emotionally over the seven-episode series.

Other cast members include Tawny Newsome, Will Catlett, Paul Adelstein, Theo Rossi, Ash Santos, John Ales, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lauren London, and Billy Zane.

The first three episodes of the new series are directed and executive produced by Stephen Williams, whose credits include Watchmen and Westworld. The final four are directed by Hanelle Culpepper, who directed Star Trek: Picard and Kung Fu. Hart, who is also making his dramatic series debut, joins Newman as an executive producer.

“It’s a thriller; it’s like you’ve never seen me before,” Hart previously told Entertainment Weekly. “We wanted to raise the level of curiosity, like, ‘What is Kevin trying to say? Is he playing himself?’ We never refer to the character by name, just Kid. And Kid’s life kind of parallels mine to a certain degree, and then it’s exaggerated in some places. But ultimately it’s a question of, how far would you go to protect the things you’ve worked hardest for? Where would you go to make sure those things remain yours and are never taken from you? I can say just vaguely, because I don’t want to say too much, when life throws certain obstacles and challenges at you, sometimes you don’t even know what you’re capable of. And that was the biggest thing, we wanted to put our character in a situation where he could ultimately shock himself and truly step outside of his norm to become a person that he never had no idea that he could ever be.”

The teaser provides us a closer look, and we can see right away that the brothers’ relationship is rocky at best. Despite the fact that they exchange greetings and even toasts, Kid’s expression says it all. We see more drinks being poured before cutting to the next morning, where Carlton informs Kid that they have “a situation.” While we don’t see the particular event, things quickly deteriorate, and investigators are soon knocking on Kid’s door to talk with him.

“Everything I worked hard for is over,” an obviously concerned and disturbed Kid tells his brother shortly after. “Why is it that every time you tell me you got it, I feel like I get in more trouble?” Kid wonders as Carlton attempts to convince Kid that he’s “got this.” The rest of the trailer features high-octane action sequences with the brothers fleeing not only the cops but also the mob.

Hart told fans to “buckle up” ahead of the show’s premiere in a recent Instagram post. “This one is special!” he said. “This series is a drama/thriller that will blow ur mind!”

Snipes, who has worked in practically every genre, told EW that he first mistook the series for a Curb Your Enthusiasm-style comedy. “I don’t know if you can handle the drama,” he recalls telling Hart after he discovered the considerably grittier plot. “When I come, I come correct. We’re not coming to pull punches. So if you want to go for it, then I want to give you my support.”

True Story will be available on Netflix on November 24.
