According to reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle rejected down the title Earl of Dumbarton for their son Archie because they were concerned he would be teased because of the word “dumb.”

On their wedding day, Harry and Meghan were given the titles of Earl and Countess of Dumbarton, but they allegedly “refused” the same title for their son Archie.

According to the UK daily The Telegraph, the parents worried their kid would be harassed in the United States if he had the title.

“They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it began with the word ‘dumb’ [and] they were worried about how that might look,” one insider told the publication.

Another source said, “It wasn’t just Meghan who pointed out the potential pitfalls, it also bothered Harry.”

The Sussexes’ divide with the rest of the Royal Family has increased considerably since their relocation to the United States, where they have given interviews and criticized their lifestyles in the United Kingdom.

Jackie Baillie, MSP for Dumbarton, shrugged off the rejection yesterday night, tweeting that she was pondering on the “low blow” and would make a comment in the morning.

She said: “Too late! I am reflecting on this low blow and will issue a full statement in the morning. In the meantime…..”

Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, is not yet eligible to be an HRH or a prince since he is not the British monarch’s grandson.

It has been asked whether Archie will ever be referred to as a prince, since it is claimed that Prince Charles is opposed owing to his desire for a slimmed-down monarchy.

It was originally assumed that his parents did not want him to acquire a title so that he may live a more “normal” life.

At the same time, Meghan told Oprah that Archie was barred from becoming a prince and would be refused taxpayer-funded protection, while the Royal Family highlighted the issue of his racial color.

She said that she and Harry were informed Archie would not be given protection since he was not a prince, telling Oprah, “All the grandeur around this stuff is not really important to me.

“But in those months when I was pregnant, all around same time: we have in tandem he won’t be given security, a title and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

He is, however, the heir to the title ‘Earl of Dumbarton,’ which Harry already possesses when the Queen bestowed it on him on their wedding day, and Meghan is also the Countess of Dumbarton.

The Earl of Dumbarton title was established in the Peerage of Scotland in March 1675 for Lord George Douglas’s services fighting in the Franco-Dutch War, but it became extinct in 1749 when Lord Dumbarton’s sole son died.

The Queen revived it in the UK Peerage as one of two subsidiary titles for her grandson Harry, who married Meghan Markle in May 2018 and became Duke of Sussex.

According to royal analyst Rob Jobson, Archie will inherit the title, which was formerly held by Scottish nobles and is based on the place of the same name, “whether he likes it or not.”

“If Harry ever does come back and go to Scotland, he’s not known as the Duke of Sussex, he’s known as the Earl of Dumbarton, and his son is the heir to that,” Jobson said.

“It’s one of those funny things, the royals have got titles for different areas,” he said.
