Johnny Depp is a Cousin to Queen Elizabeth: Report

Even while he isn’t the box-office star he once was, Johnny Depp remains a fan favorite. According to a genealogist, he might be related to royalty.

Ancestry scientists said they were able to find a link between the Pirates of the Caribbean star and the present British Queen, establishing them as 20th cousins.

However, the lineage was not set in stone, with genealogists acknowledging that they were relying on an undocumented but well-known marriage between Yorkshireman Richard Denton and Helen Windebank in the 1600s to link the two.

The connection between the actor and the Queen, 87, extends back to Edward III, who died in 1377, according to Nick Barratt, genealogist on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are?

Dr. Nick Barratt said he felt confident in designating Depp and the queen as cousins after researching Depp’s family history. Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1963.

Sir William Gascoigne and his wife Margaret Percy, who was a direct descendant of King Edward III, were descended from one branch of Depp’s family line.

“When I examined Johnny’s history, I discovered a likely connection to the royal family,” Barratt claimed, according to an Insider report. “I’ve since established the family tree that demonstrates how. You have to go back more than 500 years to reach the point where his ancestors become royal.”

“I believe the balance of probability is that there is indeed a link between Depp and the royals – though I doubt we’ll ever be able to prove it 100 percent,” Barratt said, adding that the link can’t be confirmed.
