Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of Full House actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, talked about how she felt about entering into acting in a new interview.

With a family name like “Olsen,” it’s impossible not to think of Mary-Kate and Ashley, and Elizabeth Olsen was well aware of her elder sister’s celebrity from an early age. In an interview with Glamour UK, the actress confesses that when she first considered pursuing a career in acting, she didn’t want to be associated with her sisters.

Elizabeth Olsen has quickly established herself as one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I was 10 and I was curious about auditioning,” she said. “And I realized very quickly it wasn’t for me because I was missing my sports teams, my dance class and all the extracurricular activities at school. But during that time, I thought, ‘I don’t want to be associated with [Mary-Kate and Ashley],’ for some reason.”

When she first started out in the profession, Elizabeth said she was put off by how much it pulled her away from other aspects of her life as a 10-year-old, such as school and all the other things that come with being a kid.

Elizabeth also stated that she nearly used her first and middle names as a stage name as a child aspiring actor to distinguish herself from the Olsen twins, who have since left the acting business to focus on their fashion line The Row.

“I guess I understood what nepotism was like inherently as a 10-year-old,” she added. “I don’t know if I knew the word, but there is some sort of association of not earning something that I think bothered me at a very young age. It had to do with my own insecurities, but I was 10. So I don’t know how much I processed, but I did think, ‘I’m going to be Elizabeth Chase [her middle name] when I become an actress.’”

Alongside her sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, she made her acting debut in 1994 at the age of five. Elizabeth went on to flourish as an actress and was cast as Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron in 2015.

In her debut, s he portrayed a girl in a car under the name Lizzie Olsen. She wouldn’t break out as Elizabeth Olsen until 2011’s Silent House and Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Elizabeth recalled keeping the possibility of leveraging her sisters’ business contacts to promote her acting career open in a 2011 interview with Nylon magazine. “I went through a phase when I first got into college where I was thinking if I don’t get a manager or agent, I’ll ask the girls [Mary-Kate and Ashley] to help me,” she said. “I was OK with that idea, but I never needed it.”

While her career on the big screen was put on hold for a few years as Mary-Kate and Ashley basked in the spotlight, she believes her elder sisters taught her some important professional and life lessons: “No is a full sentence”.

“I always felt like I could say ‘No’ in any work situation – if someone was making me feel uncomfortable – and I just feel like that’s what we need. We don’t have to follow suit if it doesn’t feel right. We need to be listening to our gut.”

Despite maintaining the name, it appears that the 32-year-old had little to be concerned about. Many of Elizabeth’s admirers were completely unaware that she was connected to the Olsen twins.

Following tabloid coverage of Mary-Kate, who was hospitalized for an eating issue in 2004, and Ashley when they were young adults, Elizabeth, who has another sister and two brothers, said she was hesitant to pursue acting as a career.

“That was when the media was what I found to be abusive to my sisters, and I thought I really didn’t want to be in the industry,” she told Nylon. “They turned 18 and what was going on in her life—I’m talking about Mary-Kate—was all over the news. They would follow us shopping and [Mary-Kate and Ashley] would almost get into car accidents because of the paparazzi, and I didn’t want to be a part of it. I just thought, This is such bulls—t.”

“There was a time where women were competing with one another and now we’re at a time where women are holding each other up.”

In 2006, the twins left acting to establish TheRow, a premium cult label. Olsen is currently most recognized for her appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently in the Disney+ series WandaVision.
