Sofia Vergara, star of Modern Family, has topped Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid actresses, leading a resurgence by small-screen talent in a year when movie theaters have shutdown, the magazine said Friday.

In a 12 month period, she made $43 million.

Sofia Vergara received $5 million for her work on Modern Family and $10 million for her work on America’s Got Talent, according to Forbes. Her earnings were boosted by the actor’s multiple brand sponsorships. Angelina Jolie, meanwhile, came in second on the list with 35.5 million dollars. The actor’s highest salary came from her appearance in The Eternals, a $200 million Marvel film.

Gal Gadot ($31 million), Melissa McCarthy ($25 million), Meryl Streep ($24 million), Emily Blunt ($22.5 million), Nicole Kidman ($22 million), Ellen Pompeo ($19 million), Elisabeth Moss ($16 million), and Viola Davis ($15.5 million) are also among the top ten earners.

The coronavirus outbreak immobilized Hollywood, causing production to halt and cinemas to close, delaying a slew of big-budget blockbusters.

Many movie stars are said to receive large bonuses based on box office performance, and the lack of new theatrical releases has allowed TV stars like Vergara, “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Ellen Pompeo (No. 8; $19 million), and “The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Elisabeth Moss (No. 9; $16 million) to rise to the top of the pay scale.

According to Forbes, the top ten highest-paid actresses in the world in 2020 earned a total of $254 million in the 12 months preceding June. This was a 20% decrease from the previous year.

By contrast, the top ten highest-paid male actors earned $545 million, about quadruple the amount.

Forbes published the list of the Highest-paid Actors of 2020 (Male) in August, and Dwayne Johnson took the top spot with 87.5 million dollars. Jackie Chan, Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, and Ben Affleck are among others on the list. The actor Akshay Kumar came in sixth place, making him the only Bollywood actor to reach the list.
