Carrie Fisher is now revealing a secret that she has kept hidden for over 40 years: Han Solo and Princess Leia had a real-life affair.

Fisher says she had a “intense” romance with co-star Harrison Ford during the production of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in 1976, according to People magazine.

“It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend,” she says.

Fisher was 19 at the time, while Ford was 33 and married to his first wife, Mary Marquardt. He was apparently given advance notice about the book and was sent a draft copy.

Fisher drew the story from diaries she kept during filming and said she felt it was the right moment to share what had been a formative experience for her. She remarked, “It’s been 40 years,”

Fisher discusses the romance in her forthcoming memoirs “The Princess Diarist.”

According to an excerpt from the book published in this week’s People, she had reservations about starting the affair, which began after a birthday celebration for filmmaker George Lucas.

“I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow,” she jots down in the book. “How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”

Fisher recalls the experience fondly, despite the fact that their unexpected relationship caught her completely off guard and ran its course after the film was over.

“I was so inexperienced,” she admits, “but I trusted something about him. He was kind.”

Last year’s box office triumph, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, reunited her with Ford.
