Tony Bennett met his wife Susan Benedetto while she was still in her mother’s womb, decades before they fell in love.

Bennett chronicles their strange first encounter in his new book Just Getting Started, according to People. The meeting took place half a century ago.

The singer claims to have met Benedetto’s parents Marion and Dayl Crow at a gig in 1966 when he was 40 years old.

Bennett and Benedetto’s parents all posed for a portrait that evening, which makes the 19-time Grammy winner laugh to this day.

“As fate would have it, Marion was pregnant at the time with … Susan!” Bennett wrote in his book. “It’s a photo we all laugh about, knowing the incredible turn of events that followed.”

One way to describe it is as a “incredible turn of events.” There are lots of couples with large age gaps, but we didn’t need to know how these two “met” in the first place.

Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and “The Way You Look Tonight” were among Benedetto’s parents’ favorite songs as a child. According to the book, Benedetto became the president of Bennett’s fan club in the San Francisco Bay Area when he was a teenager.

Aged 19, Benedetto finally met her future husband after demanding to meet him backstage following a performance.

Bennett recalls, “It tickled me that someone her age was so devoted to my music. I not only agreed to say hello to her backstage but asked her to be my date for the evening, and that’s how it all really began, foreshadowed by a backstage photo taken in 1966!”

The “Because of You” singer, now 90, and Benedetto started dating in the late 1980s and married in 2007.

Personally, I’m not sure I’d be delighted by such a “turn of events,” and I’m not sure I’d want to write about it in my autobiography.

Bennett had four children from his previous marriages. He and Benedetto had been dating for 20 years before marrying in 2007. Despite the small scale of the ceremony, Benedetto was overjoyed to marry the man who has remained her musical idol.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Benedetto remarked, “He’s always romantic – every day.”

According to Just Getting Started, the couple’s large age gap was never a source of contention.

“I can’t say that we didn’t notice the age difference when we first met,” writes Bennett. “But I can say that after all of these years together, we don’t notice it much now. We’re compatible in all ways.”
