Forget Brad, Jen, and Angelina, the 1950s adultery scandal between Eddie Fisher, his wife Debbie Reynolds, and her best friend Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most scandalous celebrity tragedies ever.

According to Debbie Reynolds’ 2013 autobiography “Unsinkable,” singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds were dubbed “America’s Sweethearts” by the press in the 1950s. From the outside, everything appeared to be in order.

According to IMDb, Fisher was one of the best performers at the time, while Reynolds had a successful career on the big screen, featuring in films like “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952).

Fisher and Reynolds first met while entertaining American troops overseas during the Korean War, although Reynolds was already friends with Taylor as a studio star.

Reynolds told People, “I went to MGM when I was around 17, and Liz was there, too, but she was already a star. We went to school together on the lot, when she was in between films. I was just a beginner, and she and I were not in any manner alike, but we got along very well because I was in awe of going to school with Elizabeth Taylor. And if anyone said they weren’t, then they were lying. Or blind.”

Reynolds’s first spouse was Fisher, who went on to be Taylor’s fourth. The two performers had been closest friends since high school, but their relationship was shattered by the affair.

Reynolds had been cautioned not to go forward with the wedding by none other than singer Frank Sinatra.

According to Vogue magazine, Reynolds subsequently recounted that Sinatra, with whom she co-starred in 1955’s “The Tender Trap,” persuaded her to abandon her intentions. “He said I shouldn’t get married to a singer. ‘We’re not faithful. It’s ridiculous for you to take this on.'”  Reynolds was too enamored to listen.

Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’ marriage ended after he was discovered cheating on her –– and she found out in a shocking way.

Reynolds said that Taylor and Fisher pushed her into giving him a divorce.

Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Mike Todd, were close friends of Fisher and Reynolds. Taylor was obviously sad after Todd perished in an aircraft disaster, and Reynolds instructed her husband to console her.

Reynolds didn’t think much of the two of them spending time together while she was caring for the couple’s two small children at first. “At the time, I thought it was simply that he was filling this terrible void for her,” Reynolds recalled (via ET Online). Fisher was merely offering Taylor his friendship, she assumed. According to the Daily Mail, Fisher was Todd’s best man during his wedding to Taylor, while Reynolds was one of the bridesmaids.

Reynolds was missing Fisher one day while he was on tour. Fisher answered the phone in the hotel room when she called her friend Taylor for company.

“Suddenly, a lot of things clicked into place,” she explained. “I could hear her voice asking him who was calling — they were obviously in bed together. I yelled at him, ‘Roll over, darling and let me speak to Elizabeth.’”

According to the Hollywood legend, she had ignored her husband’s adultery until she couldn’t stand it any longer. As she described it,

“I was the last to find out about the affair. There had been hints in the papers and I had noticed that when I turned up at functions or parties on my own my friends were whispering. Although I didn’t want to find out the truth, I had to face up to it. Even so, it was a great shock to find them together. It left me shattered.”

They had two children at the time, a boy named Todd and a girl called Carrie Fisher, both of whom went on to appear in Star Wars.

That cheating incident resulted in a fight between Fisher and Reynolds, with Fisher requesting a divorce.

“I was very religious so I didn’t believe in divorce,” Reynolds explained. “But they laid guilt on me that I was keeping them and true love apart. So, I finally let Eddie off the hook.”

Taylor and Fisher married on the same day their divorce was finalized.

Eddie Fisher’s own autobiography gives an entirely different side to how and why the affair happened. I found it very interesting.
