Marvel and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures have temporarily halted work on the upcoming sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” due to an injury sustained by actor Letitia Wright. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wright was injured in August while filming a sequence using a stunt rig on location in Boston. She is still recovering due to the severity of her injuries.

Her accident was not expected to affect the film’s production timeline at the time.

Wakanda Forever is in production in Atlanta, with Black Panther writer-director Ryan Coogler returning. Coogler has shot as much material as he can without Wright, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story first. The week before Thanksgiving is likely to be the last week of production before restarting in early 2022.

“Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work early in 2022,” a spokesperson for Wright said.

“Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.”

Angela Bassett, Wright’s Black Panther costar, told fans in September that Wright’s injuries were minor and downplayed their impact on the actor. Bassett said, “She had a little bit of a fall, but it’s not too bad. You know, anything like that will shake you up, but she’s just a little, slight, little petite thing. But she is fine and ready to go.” Nate Moore, the producer, announced in October that the film’s production was proceeding well. He remarked, “We’re shooting in Atlanta and it’s going really well.”

The sequel follows up after the events of the 2018 original, with Wright resuming her role as T’Challa’s younger sister, Shuri. Marvel is keeping the storyline of Wakanda Forever under wraps, but it will continue the saga of the Wakandan royal family following the death of T’Challa actor Chadwick Boseman last year.

Shuri was promoted to a lead role following Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death in August 2020.

Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, and Angela Bassett are among the cast members who are likely to return for the sequel to the best picture candidate and three-time Oscar winner.

The production halt isn’t expected to affect Wakanda Forever’s release date at this time: The film will still be released in theaters on November 11, 2022.
