Tom Cruise is known for performing his own stunts in his films, which are often risky. But it turns out he was doing them from the beginning of his career.

Last week on the Graham Norton Show, Cruise said that when filming The Outsiders in 1983, he once ate so much chocolate cake for such a long length of time that he vomited.

“I was working with [Francis Ford] Coppola, and I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to eat chocolate cake in the scene.’

… I had to do it in the scene, it’s part of the character, I’m going to eat chocolate cake. We ended up shooting this scene for three days, and we did like 100 takes of me eating chocolate cake, and I had to keep eating it.”

Cruise couldn’t have been happier to have an unending supply of chocolate cake when he initially started filming the sequence.

“The first couple of takes, I was like ‘this is so good, it was so moist.'”

But by the 100th try, he couldn’t bear the taste of chocolate any more.

“And then it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, did we get it?’ Three days of Francis [Ford Coppola] saying: ‘Let’s do it again.’ I was in sugar shock, I was vomiting.”

This is the extent to which he will go in order to serve his craft. For the same scene, other performers may have selected a less rich option. Other performers may have done the thing where they just push their food about their plate with their fork, never letting it get near their mouths. Tom Cruise, though, is different. Cruise is willing to go above and beyond to attain excellence. And it turns out that in this situation, that extra step is consuming a significant amount of chocolate cake.

Here’s the compilation of moments showing Cruise’s character from “The Outsiders,” which also starred Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, and Patrick Swayze, includes the cake-eating scene.

Cruise is known for his frenzied sprinting in his films and his commitment to making them look as real as possible. It’s funny to think that one of the most difficult things he’s ever had to endure while filming is eating chocolate cake.

“We were shooting Color of Money in Chicago … I was there and I tried my wardrobe on in the summer,” Cruise said. “And I was like, ‘I’m gonna have a leather jacket, t-shirt. I’m gonna have my hair blown back, it’s guaranteed up to 90 miles an hour.”

When it came time to shoot the film in the winter, however, Cruise realized he had made a mistake. Newman wore a huge, warm coat and sat in a vehicle with an electric heater, while Cruise “couldn’t speak” because he was too chilly.

Cruise told Norton, “Lessons learned.”

Mission: Impossible 7 has been pushed back until May 2022, however work on it and Mission: Impossible 8 is still continuing.
