Owen Wilson opened up about his failed suicide attempt in 2007 and how his elder brother Andrew helped him recover from the ordeal.

Owen, who has two brothers named Andrew and Luke, was committed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in August 2007 after attempting suicide at his Santa Monica home.

Owen told Esquire that he was “pretty grateful” that Andrew stepped in to help since he now knows that life can be “good.”

“Sometimes life seems to be played out by Tom Hardy in ‘The Revenant,’ a nightmarish guy trying to kill you where even if you get the upper hand,” remarked the “star” from “French Dispatch.”

Wilson continued, “He will still be there eventually and whisper, ‘This will not bring your boy back’ or your father back or any good times from your past back. Or whatever. And when life gets played by the guy you just have to hang out and wait for it to pass. ‘”

Following the attempt, Andrew “stayed in his house with him” and “after that, rising with him each morning and writing up little schedules for each day so that life seemed at first manageable and then, at some point, a long time later, actually good,” according to Esquire.

The Marley and Me actor went on to say that he is currently in a good place and that he is ‘feeling pretty grateful.’

‘I’ve been in sort of a lucky place of feeling pretty appreciative of things,’ he said.

‘I know everything’s kind of up and down, but when you get on one of these waves, you’ve gotta ride it as long as you can… Feeling pretty grateful. Well, grateful’s one of those words that get used all the time. Appreciative. Of, you know, stuff.’

Wilson also talked about how as a child, he became acutely aware of death.

“As a kid, there’s a lot of things that you think about,” he told Esquire. “Death—that kind of landed with me when I was about eleven. And I don’t remember ever talking with my parents about it. Although I do remember one time saying to my dad—and I remember exactly where in the house—saying, ‘I worry about dying,’ and seeing my dad turn away and catch himself. And I was surprised to see that reaction. But who knows, maybe that was part of why I said it.”

Luke Wilson, the star of “Legally Blonde” was the one who discovered him and dialed 911.

Owen’s publicist released a statement on his behalf the day after he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, saying, “I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time.”

“Obviously, he has been through a lot this week,” Wes Anderson told the Times in September 2007. The director, who worked with Owen on such films as Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, and The French Dispatch, said that Owen “has been doing very well, he has been making us laugh. When he is ready, he’s going to speak for himself much better than any of us could.”

Owen has been appearing in the Disney+ spin-off series Loki in recent weeks, and he will also appear in Wes Anderson’s film The French Dispatch.

Following a struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, Owen’s Hollywood celebrity father Robert Wilson died in 2017.
