Sharon Stone has claimed that her breakout performance in the 1992 film Basic Instinct earned her just a “little bit of money,” compared to co-star Michael Douglas’ $14 million.

The actress was speaking about her new biography The Beauty of Living Twice, in which she frankly discussed the film that catapulted her to Hollywood stardom overnight, while her co-star Michael Douglas, 73, allegedly pocketed millions.

She even shared some frightening things from her past, including how her valuables were stolen at Cannes.

The A-lister addressed the rumored wage discrepancy between her and her male co-star, who portrayed Detective Nick Curran, in an interview with CBC’s Q With Tom Power.

“I didn’t get paid to do ‘Basic Instinct,'” she said. “I made a little bit of money. Michael made $14 million and has points. I made not enough money to buy my dress to go to the Oscars the next year. I was in this weird limbo where I was suddenly famous, but didn’t have any money.”

The term “points” refers to the proportion of box office earnings obtained from the film’s first day of release.

According to The Things, Stone never revealed her remuneration for the picture, although it was earlier estimated to be close to US$500,000 (about $645,000).

The picture went on to earn US$352 million (about $454 million) at the box office worldwide.

‘It’s Friday and you’re you. Tuesday, you’re the Beatles,’ Stone said when asked how her life altered after the movie came out.

‘People are climbing all over your car. You try to walk down the street and suddenly 30 people that were shopping are running, chasing you.’

‘I didn’t have what I needed,’ Stone remarked when asked whether she could afford private protection.

Sharon called her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival a month after the film premiered “insanity.”

She said that when she returned to the hotel where she was staying, all of her stuff, including her toothbrush and contact lenses, had been stolen.

The hotel employees “created this big circle that I and my two girlfriends were inside of and then they try to take me through the lobby” in an attempt to escape the hotel without the protection of security.

“There were so many people, hundreds of people, pulling at us and going berserk. So this was our introduction, ‘Hello, you’re famous.’ We had no idea,” the actor said.

Other members of the Basic Instinct cast included George Dzundza as Detective Gus Moran, Leilani Sarelle as Roxanne Hardy, Chelcie Ross as Captain Talcott, Jeanne Tripplehorn as Dr Beth Garner, Denis Arndt as Lieutenant Phillip Walker, Daniel von Bargen as Lieutenant Marty Nielsen, James Rebhorn as Dr McElwaine.
