Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan Markle’s half-brother, was arrested for drunk driving early, according to People.
Oregon State Police stopped Meghan Markle’s estranged half-brother at 1:33 a.m. on Friday. Following a field sobriety test, Thomas Jr. underwent a breathalyzer test and had a blood alcohol content of .11 percent, according to police. This is above the legal limit of .08.
Meghan’s brother was taken to the Grants Pass Sobering Center. His Chevrolet Silverado was seized.
Markle declared his engagement to Darlene Blount, his two-year partner, on Tuesday. He told DailyMailTV that he wished his sister and Prince Harry will attend his wedding, but the royal has never had a relationship with her half-brother or half-sister.
People recently reported that Meghan has “no relationship with her half-siblings, nor has she ever had one,” according to sources close to her.
Thomas Jr. and Samantha Markle, Meghan’s father’s children from his first marriage, were “out of the house by the time she was born,” according to the report.
That hasn’t prevented the estranged siblings from expressing their feelings about their sister, especially in the months leading up to her wedding. Thomas dubbed the marriage “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history” in a letter published in InTouch in May 2018.
According to TMZ, the duchess is estranged from her half-brother, who allegedly wrote Prince Harry a letter in April saying, “It’s not too late. Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you .”
This isn’t the first time the Duchess of Sussex’s half-brother has gotten himself into legal trouble. In January 2017, he was charged with domestic assault after holding his spouse, Darlene Blount, at gunpoint during a drunken brawl. Blount, who is now his fiancée, then dropped the lawsuit a month later.
“My son has a serious problem and he needs help,” Thomas’ father tells TMZ. “I hope he gets it.” Samantha, Thomas Jr.’s niece, tells TMZ, “His drinking is not related to Meghan. He always drank .”
