The complete list of Oscar nominees was recently announced, and Aretha Franklin’s family couldn’t help but notice her omission. The renowned biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson as the late singer, detailed the tale of the Queen of Soul’s life last year. Hudson’s performance gained tremendous acclaim, with many agreeing that she nailed the character. Hudson and Respect would have fit in in among the other Best Actress contenders, but for whatever reason, they didn’t make the cut.

Aretha Franklin’s niece Sabrina Owens told TMZ that she is unhappy by the Oscar rejection because she believes JH did a tremendous job in the biopic “Respect” — one that deserves to be recognized — and that her aunt would agree.

She informed the source that her aunt was extremely deeply engaged in the film about her life before she died, and that she chose Hudson for the part. It’s understandable that Hudson was irritated by the rejection, given how wonderfully she performed.

Franklin’s cousin and longtime backup vocalist, Brenda Franklin Corbit, said Franklin would have been disappointed that Hudson’s performance was ignored, and she believes the Academy made a tremendous mistake. Hudson “poured her heart and soul into the role” and couldn’t have done it any better, according to Corbit.

And, get this, Brenda claims that Aretha would have been furious at her exclusion because she was clearly thinking about Oscar when putting the show together.

Brenda hopes Jennifer is aware that the Franklin family as a whole feels she did Aretha proud… and that she is considered one of their own.

Fans on social media have also expressed their displeasure at Hudson’s omission, as well as Lady Gaga’s omission for her involvement in House of Gucci.

We have to admit, it’s rare for the family of a biopic’s subject to be so enamored with an actor’s portrayal of their loved one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucie Arnaz, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s daughter, who was consulted in the development of “Being the Ricardos” and generally liked Nicole Kidman’s portrayal, fought for several sequences to be deleted since they were inaccurate. And, according to Us Weekly, the royal family has “mixed feelings” about how they were represented in “The Crown.”
