With two Academy Award bellwethers either postponed (as was the case with the Critics Choice Awards) or minimized (the Golden Globes were held in January but were tweeted rather than aired), nominees for this year’s Oscars were announced on Tuesday, kicking off a lethargic season.

With 12 nominations, “The Power of the Dog” was the most nominated picture. Jane Campion, the drama’s director, made history by becoming the first woman to be nominated for best director several times. (She had already received a nod for “The Piano.”)

Steven Spielberg, a fellow director contender, also established a new milestone. Spielberg has now produced 11 films nominated for best picture, a new record for the Oscars, as producer of “West Side Story,” which had a total of seven nominations.

Denzel Washington earned his ninth Oscar nomination for his portrayal in “The Tragedy of Macbeth” breaking his own record as the most nominated Black actor in Academy Awards history. Denzel previously won best supporting actor and best actor Oscars for his roles in 1989’s “Glory” and 2001’s “Training Day,” the latter of which made him one of four Black actors to win the award, alongside Sidney Poitier (“Lilies of the Field”), Jamie Foxx (“Ray”), and Forest Whitaker (“Ray”) (“The Last King of Scotland”).

The presentation will be held on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, and will honor films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021. The complete list of nominations may be seen below.
