The second season of 50 Cent’s Starz hip hop anthology series “A Moment in Time” will center around Snoop Dogg’s 1993 murder trial.

The Lionsgate-backed premium cable network is working on a potential second season of the anthology with executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The new documentary, Murder Was the Case, is about Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus, who was accused with first-degree murder in 1993 for the killing of Philip Woldemariam, a rival gang member who was slain by Snoop’s bodyguard. Snoop had the world’s No. 1 album at the time, Doggy Style, and was riding high on the success of the song “Murder Was the Case.”

The case’s publicity boosted album sales to over 5 million copies, but the song’s violent nature would later hurt Snoop’s case in court. Snoop Dogg and his defense team, led by defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, who represented OJ Simpson just a year earlier, claimed that his bodyguard was the shooter and that he acted in self-defense. This season will lift the veil on the tale, revealing what Snoop had to deal with both in front of and behind the camera.

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as saying, “Murder Was the Case is an incredible story.” Snoop Dogg is also named as an executive producer on the project, which he executive produced as part of a four-year pact with Starz back in 2016. “Snoop had the biggest album in the country and was fighting for his freedom in the courtroom,” Jackson concluded. “The only place to go on this incredible ride is with G-Unit Film & Television. I’m excited to be working with Snoop to bring it to television.”

Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus added, “I am excited to finally tell the story of ‘Murder was the Case.’ This was a pivotal moment in my life and career and I’ve deliberately waited until I found the right partner to bring this to the screen. #GLG 🚦You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge…”

Murder Was the Case is still in its early phases of production. The Massacre, the first season of a Moment in Time, will center on 50 Cent’s feud with rapper The Game, which resulted in a murder-for-hire conspiracy that landed music mogul James Rosemond in jail.

The Power franchise is produced by Jackson’s G-Unit label, which also just renewed BMF on Starz. Broadus, Shante Broadus, and Sara Ramaker, through Snoopadelic Films, are also executive producers. Anthony Wilson will also serve as an executive producer on Lionsgate Television’s next series.
