Royal Family reacts to baby Lili’s birth

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the arrival of their second child, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Sunday, and the rest of the royal family was quick to congratulate the pair on their joyous news.

The news has “delighted” the queen, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Prince William and Kate Middleton, according to a statement.

“Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana!” read a post from the Queen Elizabeth II’s official Twitter account. “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news. Lilibet is Her Majesty’s 11th great-grandchild.”

In a statement, a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman stated, “The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

The couple announced their pregnancy in February, nearly two years after their son Archie was born, and showed off the Suits alum’s baby bulge.

Lili, who joins elder brother Archie Harrison, 2, was born at 11:40 a.m. Friday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, according to The Associated Press. Harry and Meghan Markle said their daughter’s name is a homage to the queen and Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, in a statement issued Sunday.

“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” the pair said in a statement.

“This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”

Princess Eugenie, who welcomed her first child earlier this year and has long been one of Harry’s closest confidantes, uploaded a black-and-white portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on her Instagram Stories, adding below, “Congratulations dear cousins…

we couldn’t be happier for you all.”

“On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili,” Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, said on the website for their nonprofit organization, the Archewell Foundation. “She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

The new baby is Queen Elizabeth’s eleventh great-grandchild, and she is now eighth in line for the British throne, following her father, her brother Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, her grandfather Prince Charles, her uncle Prince William, and her cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Meghan and the baby are well and “settling in at home,” according to the pair, who moved to Southern California last year after stepping down as senior members of the royal family.
