In an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle mentioned a trip to Australia in 2018 as a turning point in their relationship with the royal family.

While Markle was initially well accepted by the royals, the dynamic “really changed” following the couple’s 14-day tour to the South Pacific in October 2018, according to Harry.

Prince Harry stated, “They were, they were really welcoming [of Meghan]. But it really changed after the Australia tour. After our South Pacific tour. That was our first tour. It was also the first time that the family got to see how incredible she is at the job. And that brought back memories.”

The trip his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, took in 1983 was the subject of the duke’s musings.

Princess Diana’s first formal foreign tour was a six-week visit of Australia and New Zealand with Prince Charles in March and April 1983. According to royal biographers, Australians were instantly charmed with Diana’s casual demeanor, which caused a wedge between her and Charles.

The princess wowed fans on the trip, which was featured in the fourth season of Netflix’s The Crown, despite the fact that she came in the country with “something less than a smile” on her face, according to The Age.

In a 1995 BBC interview, Diana said about Charles, “With the media attention came a lot of jealousy. A great deal of complicated situations arose because of that.”

The Sydney Morning Herald said at the time that “Prince Charles, heir to the throne, took a back seat as the young princess captured the admiration and affection of the city’s schoolchildren,”

“The crowds complained when Prince Charles went over to their side of the street during a walkabout … In public, Charles accepted the revised status quo with good grace; in private he blamed Diana,” Andrew Morton wrote in his biography “Diana: Her True Story,” published in 1992.”

Prince Charles was “jealous” of the attention Diana got, Diana later told writer Andrew Morton.

“I understood the jealousy but I couldn’t explain that I didn’t ask for it,” she said.

Back to Meghan.

In 2018, 35 years later, the new Duchess of Sussex was greeted with a similarly warm reception in Australia, with tabloids characterizing Meghan as “shining like the sun over Sydney Harbour.”

“So are you saying that there were hints of jealousy?” Winfrey asked.

“I just wish that we would all learn from the past,” Harry said. “But to see how effortless it was for Meghan to come into the family so quickly, in Australia, and across New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, and just be able to connect with people … You know, as we talked about, she was very much welcomed into the family, not just by the family, but by the world, certainly by the Commonwealth.

He continued: “Really here you have one of the greatest assets to the Commonwealth that the family could have ever wished for.”

Earlier in the interview, Markle told Winfrey that she had suicidal ideas since the royals and palace employees never acknowledged or protected her from the British press.

The pair also revealed they were expecting a baby girl, but the announcement was immediately overshadowed by troubling accusations of racism within the royal family.

Recollections about the Australian Tour may vary! It didn’t go that well! Throwing hot tea on staff, and reducing others to tears is not generally well received. Harry is a nasty, vain msn turning on his family so publicly.
