It’s no surprise that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have had issues with the British royal family. However, Markle revealed that her relationship with Queen Elizabeth II has been positive during their two-hour interview special with Oprah.

“It’s hard for people to distinguish the two because it’s a family business, there’s the family, and then there are the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalize that because the Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me,” Meghan told Oprah.

Meghan stated that the two had shared breakfast one day and that the Queen had given her a “beautiful gift.”

“I just loved being in her company,” Meghan said, “and I remember we were in the car and she gave me some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace.”

The Duchess also shared a beautiful story about a 2018 trip she and the Queen went on together, in which the Queen volunteered to share her blanket with Meghan to keep her warm.

“She has a blanket that sits across her knees for warmth,” the duchess explained, “and it was chilly and she was like, ‘Meghan, come on,’ and [she] put it over my knees as well.”

“It made me think of my grandmother, where she’s always been warm and inviting and really welcoming.”

Despite not knowing how to curtsy, the Duchess of Sussex spoke positively of her first visit with the Queen while she and Harry were dating.

Harry asked Meghan whether she knew how to curtsy in the vehicle on the way over. She’d always believed curtsying was a social custom and that she’d simply be meeting her boyfriend’s grandma. “She’s my grandmother,” Harry said, “and she’s the queen.”

Before the two were joined on set by Harry, who revealed they’re having a daughter in the summer, the duchess chatted to Oprah separately about her experiences joining the Royal Family, parenting, and much more. Depending on whether the baby arrives before Zara and Mike Tindall’s third child, who is expected later this year, their girl will be the Queen’s 10th or 11th great-grandchild.

The interview, which aired on CBS on Sunday (7 March), provides viewers their first glimpse into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s life since they stepped down as senior members of the royal family. According to a friend of the couple, the special marks the end of a chapter in their life, and they are ready to “move on.”

Buckingham Palace said on Feb. 19 that Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, will not be returning as working royals. The news comes a year and a month after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their plans to retire.
