Shawn Mendes opened up about his and Camila Cabello’s viral video from 2019, in which they showed viewers how they “really kiss,” and admitted that they “might have had a little too much tequila” when they made it.

Shawmila made waves in September 2019 after sharing a weird Instagram video of the then-rumored pair exchanging spit to prove they’re skilled kissers.

“We saw on Twitter and stuff you guys saying stuff about the way we were kissing and how it looks weird. Like, we kiss like fish,” the “Wonder” singer jokes, before adding, “it really hurt our feelings.” The celebs smooch before abruptly proceeding to literally lick each other’s faces.

And now, on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, he’s spilled the beans on how it all came to be.

“We might have had a little too much tequila one night and just recorded ourselves making out as though we were monsters, to get a rise out of people,” Shawn acknowledged.

People accused them of kissing “like fish,” so the 22-year-old musician stated that they decided to take matters into their own hands, or should we say lips. “It just felt like everyone was talking about it and taking photos and there were paparazzi hiding in bushes and it was like, ‘What if we just posted a photo of us licking each others’ faces? Like, no one’s ever even seen us kiss. We’re just gonna go full-on gross,'” Shawn told Shepard.

After that, the “Wonder” singer says he received conflicting reactions from his friends and fans.

“People were so offended by it and so excited by it, too,” Mendes recalls. “It was like this really intense thing. I was getting messages from people being like, ‘This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen’ and people being like, ‘You should really take that down. I don’t know, it’s kind of offensive.'”

“It was ridiculous, but at the time, it was relevant,” he continued.

Many others seem to agree; it’s been four months and we’re still talking about it, and we can’t even blame it on the tequila.

Mendes and Cabello’s outrageous video came up during his talk with Shepard when the actor asked about a certain scene in Mendes’ new Netflix documentary, “Shawn Mendes: In Wonder.”
