Adam Sandler has promised to make a film that is “so bad on purpose” if he does not win an Oscar for his role in Uncut Gems.

Sandler went on The Howard Stern Show the day after losing to Adam Driver at the Gotham Awards to promote Uncut Gems, a thriller described by reviewers as “being locked inside the pinwheeling brain of a lunatic.”

During the conversation, Stern urged Sandler, who is often wary of the public, to ramp up his campaign for an Oscar nomination. The actor has already received more publicity than usual, including a rare feature in The New York Times. When Stern brought it up, Sandler said, “I did like an asshole. The Safdie Brothers and everybody worked so hard on the movie that I didn’t want to do what I usually do and just go, ‘Eh, I can’t help you out there.’”

Sandler, whose career has been marked by dramatic highs and lows in terms of critical response, has received acclaim for his role of a gambling addict in the film, causing him to remark, “That’s shocking, right?”

The actor went on to remark that receiving an Oscar nomination would be a “funny big thing,” and that he would be “there to win.”

“If I don’t get it, I’m going to f**king come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay,” Sandler quipped.

If he doesn’t win the golden trophy on Hollywood’s greatest night, Adam Sandler is ready to produce Jack & Jill 2: Double Trouble. Of course, the actor was kidding. Or was he? I mean, the original Jack and Jill already exists… let alone Grown Ups 2. This might be a genuine danger. Take note, Academy!

Unfortunately for Sandler, he will face some tough competition in the Best Actor category this year, as seen by his loss of the Gotham Award to Adam Driver on Monday night. Indeed, with his performances in the dramas Marriage Story and The Report, Driver appears to be a strong favorite to win his first career Oscar. Joaquin Phoenix is also a strong contender for his role as Arthur Fleck in the upcoming movie Joker. Leonardo DiCaprio is also getting a lot of attention for his role as washed-up cowboy actor Rick Dalton in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Eddie Murphy, who, like Sandler, has SNL and Netflix links, is also considered a candidate for his role as Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name.

It appears to be working though, since Sandler was voted Best Actor by the National Board of Review shortly after the Stern interview, giving him a leg up in the Oscar campaign.

Sandler totally dives into his character as diamond trader and gambling addict Howard Ratner in the A24 release. Uncut Gems is an anxiety-fueled epic directed by the same people who made Good Time, and Sandler’s performance has been called an undeniable standout. The prospect of the actor earning his first Oscar nomination is not out of the question.

In January 2020, Uncut Gems will be distributed in select UK theatres and on Netflix.
