Brie Larson Didn’t Want Captain Marvel To Wear The Bathing Suit Costume

Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, will launch into action as Captain Marvel in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated picture with an outfit inspired by a recent addition to the books. Her superhero costume, which was the equivalent of a one-piece bathing suit when she first appeared in 1977’s Ms. Marvel #1, was rather revealing.

The star will wear some recognizable outfits in Captain Marvel, but not the one-piece from Ms. Marvel’s early years.

Brie Larson and Kevin Feige both agreed that the character’s outfit should not be shown in live-action. Marvel Studios chose the stunning makeover Larson received in 2012 from designer Jamie McKelvie, and Feige made sure to remind her that this would not be the suit she would be wearing in the film.

Larson and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed getting Larson on board to appear in Captain Marvel in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter. Larson explained that she decided to join a project that she was first hesitant to join because it was the “culmination of a lot of things I’ve wanted.”

Larson mentioned seeing old Ms. Marvel comics on the wall during one of their early meetings, which Feige mentioned. “If you look at the comics, the further you go back, the less clothes Carol Danvers seems to be wearing,” Feige said. “Oftentimes it’s a one-piece bathing suit basically, with outrageous comic proportions. … Brie pointed it out on the wall, and we went, ‘Yeah … just so you know, that’s not what we’re doing.’ She goes, ‘OK. I didn’t think so, but I’m glad you said that.'”

Carol Danvers in the comic book version looks more like a WWE wrestler. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with that; it’s simply not the path this film is going in.

Her one-piece bathing suit, oddly enough, wasn’t her most revealing outfit. Her initial attire featured her exposing her midriff and wearing a very short mini-skirt, thus the bathing suit was considered an upgrade at the time. Regardless of how you feel about either outfit, it’s apparent that it wouldn’t have worked in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

To be honest, we’re relieved as well. Larson’s Captain Marvel costume is not only stunning—with or without the mohawk helmet—but it has also inspired some incredible daily looks. If only I had some extra cash on hand.

Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film will be released on March 8th.

The Captain Marvel film is based on Kelly Sue DeConnick’s 2012 comic book, which included artwork by Dexter Soy. DeConnick’s concept for Captain Marvel in that series was effectively “Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager,” a reference to the renowned test pilot.
