When Tom Cruise Jumped on Oprah’s Couch: 10 years ago

The world was turned upside down on May 23, 2005. Although only one sofa on the set of The Oprah Winfrey Show was shaken, it seemed to be a lot bigger problem. Tomorrow marks the tenth anniversary of Tom Cruise (or, as Oprah would put it, “TOM CRUIIIIIIIISE”) jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s sofa.

During a 2005 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Mission: Impossible star couldn’t stop himself from expressing his love for then-girlfriend Katie Holmes. In a scene that has since gone — and stayed — viral, Cruise raised his fist in the air, kneeled on the floor, and most famously, leapt on Winfrey’s sofa with giddiness while expressing his love for Holmes.

While promoting War of the Worlds, he told Oprah of his then-girlfriend, “She’s truly extraordinary.”

Between chuckles, Oprah told him, “Dear God, you are gone.”

Cruise answered, “I’m gone and I don’t care.”

“I’m in love. I’m in love and it’s one of these things where you want to be cool, like, ‘Yeah I like her’…that’s not how I feel,” a hyper Cruise told the talk show host. “I admired her and I thought I wanted to meet her so I called her because I wanted to meet her. You see someone’s work and you hear about them and you hear what a special person she is…and I wanted to meet this person and I met her.”

With the advent of YouTube, the video became viral. It even spawned another video, Tom Cruise Kills Oprah, using some graphics and the meme on a loop. His passionate approach toward Katie at the time may have influenced how many people saw the Hollywood A-lister, and even the talk show host subsequently apologized for how the interview went down.

Not everyone thought it was as funny: “Certainly, I did not think it would turn into the brouhaha that it did,” Oprah told TV Guide. “I thought it was an expression of delightful exuberance and love that any woman…would be thrilled to have her man jump on a sofa in love with her.”

“I think the use of that clip was really, really unfair,” Oprah went on to say, chastising the whole globe. Tom probably assumed people had moved on or forgotten about the sofa incident ten years later.

We all know what occurred between Cruise and Holmes. Just six months after going public with their affair, the couple revealed they were expecting their first child together, Suri. Suri Cruise was born in April 2006, and her parents married in December of that year. Holmes, who was raised Catholic, turned to Scientology for Cruise before they began their lives together. Their marriage is said to have crumbled due to their religious differences.

The relationship was described as a “lavishly produced freak show, designed to play out in real time, enthusiastically enacted by the biggest star in the business” in a New York Times opinion piece.
