Adam Sandler’s groundbreaking venture into a Netflix production contract has hit a hitch. Sandler is currently filming The Ridiculous Six, a Western comedy that is currently filming in New Mexico. Native American actors have walked off the set after taking issue with the script’s representations of them. Netflix is retaliating rather than succumbing to the pressure.

Actor Loren Anthony told The Associated Press that after he and other actors expressed concerns about the plot and characters, the producers ignored them. Indeed, the disgruntled performers followed through on their threats to leave, he claimed.

According to the Indian Country Today Media Network, the actors, mostly from the Navajo tribe, as well as the Native cultural advisor, fled the set after claiming that The Ridiculous Six disrespected native women and elders and distorted Apache culture.

Despite the departure of the Native American actors, sources claim that shooting on the project has not been halted.

“The movie has ‘ridiculous’ in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous,” Netflix said in a statement to NBC News. ” It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”

Members of the Native American cast would disagree. They walked off the set of the comedy, which stars Nick Nolte, Terry Crews, Steve Buscemi, Will Forte, Luke Wilson, and Whitney Cummings, among others, on Wednesday, because they believe the film is offensive to their culture. Approximately a dozen performers reportedly departed the scene, according to the Indian Country Today Media Network. One guy, Anthony, claims he first rejected the role but agreed to play it after learning that the film had engaged a cultural expert. Everything was going smoothly, he claimed, until Monday, when things became “weird on set.” Anthony explained:

“We were supposed to be Apache, but it was really stereotypical and we did not look Apache at all. We looked more like Comanche. One thing that really offended a lot of people was that there was a female character called Beaver’s breath. One character says ‘Hey, Beaver’s Breath.’ And the Native woman says, ‘How did you know my name?'”

Netflix was thrilled to welcome Sandler into the streaming family when the four-movie deal was announced.

In a statement announcing the deal, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world.”

Allison Young Navajo, one of the actors who walked off the set, said the directors and producers had been disrespectful.

“We talked to the producers about our concerns,” he told the Washington Post. “They just told us, ‘If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave.’ I was just standing there and got emotional and teary-eyed. I didn’t want to cry but the feeling just came over me. This is supposed to be a comedy that makes you laugh. A film like this should not make someone feel this way.”

“Nothing has changed,” Young stated. “We are still just Hollywood Indians.”

‘The Ridiculous Six’ is produced by Sandler’s Happy Productions, written by the actor and Tim Herlihy, and directed by Frank Coraci, who directed ‘Blended’ and ‘The Wedding Singer.’
