On Monday, Demi Lovato, a famous singer with over 102 million followers on Instagram, apologized after criticizing a frozen yogurt shop in Los Angeles called The Bigg Chill.

Lovato posted on Instagram over the weekend that the shop’s “sugar-free cookies” and other diet foods were “triggering.”

She also said she had difficulty ordering froyo from the shop because she had to pass by “tons of sugar-free cookies/other diet foods before you get to the counter.”

The Bigg Chill responded to Lovato’s criticism on their Instagram account, explaining that they offered sugar-free and gluten-free options for customers with dietary restrictions.

The shop also said that they carried items for diabetics, celiac disease, and vegans.

On Monday, Lovato posted a video on Instagram admitting that she “jumped to conclusions” and apologized for calling out the shop.

She clarified that the labeling of different dietary options should have been more specific: “It wasn’t clear to me that it was for specific health needs, and so I didn’t know that.”

Lovato has been open about her struggles with eating disorders and addiction. In a subsequent post, she said she planned to call out any business that “not only enables but praises disordered eating.”

The back-and-forth between Lovato and The Bigg Chill went viral, with many people on social media siding with the shop.

At least one user on TikTok accused Lovato of being ableist.

In a statement to HuffPost, The Bigg Chill said that it has always tried to have options for all customers, including those with dietary restrictions.

The statement also said that the shop is a small, woman-owned business that has catered to anyone who has come through the door for the past 36 years.

On Instagram, Lovato suggested that The Bigg Chill label their options as being for people with specific needs.

She also shared an old Instagram post from the shop that labeled some items “guilt-free.”

In her video apology, Lovato said she would be willing to work with The Bigg Chill to change the shop’s messaging.

She also apologized for getting the messaging wrong and said that she was not trying to come after a small business as someone with a lot of followers.

“I’m sorry that I may have disappointed some people but I’m not coming after a small business as someone with a lot of followers. That’s not what I’m doing here,” Lovato said.

The controversy surrounding Lovato’s criticism of The Bigg Chill highlights the challenges faced by businesses in providing options for customers with different dietary needs.

While some people appreciate having specific options, others may find them triggering or stigmatizing.

For people with dietary restrictions, finding suitable food options can be a struggle.

TikTok user BigYikezAmIRite shared her experience of having an autoimmune disease and being unable to have gluten, dairy, red meat, MSG, and refined sugar. She said that when she sees a gluten-free and dairy-free menu, she feels included.

In her initial Instagram story, Lovato said she wanted The Bigg Chill to “do better.”

The shop responded to her criticism by explaining their options for people with dietary restrictions.

Lovato later apologized for jumping to conclusions and said she wished the labeling had been more specific.

The controversy surrounding The Bigg Chill and Lovato’s criticism highlights the importance of clear communication and labeling for people with dietary restrictions.

Businesses that cater to people with specific dietary needs should be conscious of their messaging and ensure that they are providing an inviting environment for all customers.
