Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are urging Spotify to address the COVID-19 falsehoods on its streaming platform and take action.

Following Neil Young’s removal of his music from Spotify due to COVID-19 inconsistencies, Harry, 37, and Meghan, 40, are now urging Spotify to address the “serious harms” of misinformation on the site.

According to a spokesman for their organization, Archewell, the couple originally addressed the matter in April and have continued to press Spotify to correct falsehoods.

“Since the inception of Archewell, we have worked to address the real-time global misinformation crisis,” an Archewell spokeswoman told TODAY. “Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harms of rampant mis- and disinformation every day.”

“Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform,” the statement continued. “We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis.”

The statement ended, “We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does.”

Spotify stated on Wednesday that it had the “great responsibility” of “balancing both listener safety and creator freedom,” and that it has “removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to Covid since the start of the pandemic.”

“We are working to add a content advisory to any podcast episode that includes a discussion about Covid-19,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said in a statement on Sunday night.

“This advisory will direct listeners to our dedicated Covid-19 Hub, a resource that provides easy access to data-driven facts, up-to-date information as shared by scientists, physicians, academics and public health authorities around the world, as well as links to trusted sources.

He stated that the “new effort to combat misinformation” will be launched in the coming days.

Archewell, the Sussexes’ firm, created Archewell Audio in December 2020 and obtained an exclusive deal with Spotify. Archewell’s move of “embracing the extraordinary capacity of podcasts on Spotify while also seeking to elevate underrepresented voices is a testament to their appreciation for the potential of audio storytelling,” said the streaming behemoth at the time.

“What we love about podcasting is that it reminds all of us to take a moment and to really listen, to connect to one another without distraction,” Harry and Meghan said at the time in a joint statement.

“With the challenges of 2020, there has never been a more important time to do so, because when we hear each other, and hear each other’s stories, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are,” they added.

Rogan’s famous show, which has long been a favorite with listeners but has garnered contempt from the scientific world, dwarfs their reach.
