Anderson Cooper is well aware of his late mother’s affection for him. Gloria Vanderbilt volunteered to be a surrogate for his kid when she was 85 years old, the journalist said on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”.

Cooper informed Stephen Colbert that he’d never told anybody about this story about his mother before, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 95. Cooper described his mother as “kind of nutty” and said she had consulted a doctor at the time who informed her she could still bear a kid.

“She says to me, ‘Honey, I’m not talking about having a child of my own. I mean, that’s crazy, I’m 85 … I was thinking, you get an egg and fertilize it with a sperm, and I’ll carry your child,'” Cooper recalled. “I finally said to her, I was like, ‘Mom, I love you, but even for you, that is just batsh*t crazy. That is just nuts.’ That is so weirdly oedipal on a whole new level. That kid would be on the cover of The New York Post for the rest of its life.”

The Anderson Cooper 360 anchor described his mother’s proposal as “just nuts,” adding that she later forwarded him an article about a 65-year-old lady who gave birth to a child for her son and son-in-law.

“Then, fast forward two years later, I get a thing in the mail that my mom has sent me … and it’s a newspaper clipping and it’s a photograph, the headline is, ‘Grandmother Bears Child for Son,’ and it’s some woman, I think in Italy who was like 65 or something, or 70,” Cooper recounted. “And it’s a photo of her in the labor room in the stirrups.”

“She’s in the delivery room with her legs in the thing, and her son and his husband are right there, ready to catch. And my mom has circled it, and written in a note, ‘See!'”

“[I’m a] bad son,” Cooper humorously said as the story was over.

Cooper’s predicament seemed to have worked out. Wyatt, his son with previous partner Benjamin Maisani, was born via surrogate in 2020.

In April 2020, the new dad posted a nice message to his mother on Instagram while announcing the baby.

Cooper added, “I am grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, and watched over him lovingly, and tenderly, and gave birth to him. It is an extraordinary blessing — what she, and all surrogates give to families who can’t have children. … I do wish my mom and dad and my brother, Carter, were alive to meet Wyatt, but I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing, happy to know that their love is alive in me and in Wyatt, and that our family continues.”

In an interview with Howard Stern, Copper stated that he is focusing on co-parenting the 1-year-old with ex patner Benjamin in May 2020.

“I don’t really have a family, so my friends have become my family. This is somebody I was involved with for 10 years,” he said. “He’s a great guy. We didn’t work out as a couple but … if more people love my son and are in his life, I’m all for that. My ex is a great guy, and I think it’s good to have two parents if you can.”
