Meghan says Queen was ‘wonderful’ to her and she calls to check in

It’s no secret that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have had issues with the British royal family. However, Markle confirmed that her relationship with Queen Elizabeth II has been pleasant during their two-hour interview special with Oprah.

The 39-year-old Duchess of Sussex told the 67-year-old talk show host that she “loved” being in Her Majesty’s company.

Meghan Markle praised the Queen, claiming that she had been “wonderful” to her and that she had once offered to share a blanket over her knees for warmth.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Sunday, Meghan Markle discussed the differences between the royal family as a “family” and as a “business”

“It’s hard for people to distinguish the two because it’s a family business, there’s the family, and then there are the people that are running the institution, those are two separate things and it’s important to be able to compartmentalize that because the Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me,” Meghan told Oprah.

“I mean, we had one of our first joint engagement together. She asked me to join her, and I was on the train,” Meghan said of her Cheshire engagement with the Queen weeks before her wedding. she said, referring to her royal outing with Queen Elizabeth just a few weeks after her royal wedding.

“And we have breakfast together that morning and she gave me a beautiful gift and I just really loved being in her company, and I remember we were in the car and she gave me some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace, and we were in the car going between engagements,” she said.

“And she has a blanket that sits across her, her knees, for warmth and it was chilly and she was like, ‘Meghan, come on.’ And put it over my knees as well. And it made me think of my grandmother, where she’s always been warm and inviting and really welcoming.”

Meghan responded, “Yes,” to Oprah’s statement that the Queen “made you feel welcomed.”

‘There’s the family, and then there’s the people that are running the institution – those are two separate things, and it’s important to be able to compartmentalise that,’ the Duchess said.

Markle recalled seeing the queen for the first time shortly after she and Harry started dating in July 2016. At the time of their courtship, Markle revealed that she didn’t know anything about the royal family. “I went into it naively. I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family. It wasn’t part of the conversation at home, it wasn’t something we followed,” she said.

She had a better perspective on the royal family back then. She confessed that she couldn’t tell the difference between a celebrity and a royal. “I didn’t fully understand what the job was,” she admitted. “As Americans, what do you know about the royals? It’s what you read in fairy tales. It’s easy to have an image of it that’s so far from reality. That’s what’s been tricky over the last few years. When the perception and the reality are two different things. There’s a complete misalignment.”

The pair said they were enjoying their new life and going to the beach with their son Archie, while also announcing they were expecting a baby girl this summer.

Meghan and Harry, 36, and their one-year-old son Archie now live in a £11 million home in Santa Barbara, close to Oprah.

Meghan also announced that after learning about the Duke of Edinburgh’s hospitalization, she contacted the Queen to inquire about his condition.

The Duchess said she awoke earlier than Harry one morning to see a note from a member of their team in the United Kingdom informing her that Prince Philip had been admitted to hospital.

‘I just picked up the phone and called the Queen to check in,’ she said.

Buckingham Palace announced on Feb. 19 that Prince Harry, 36, and Meghan Markle, 39, would not be returning as working royals. The news comes a year and a month after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to retire, which included a one-year review clause.

“Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service,” the palace statement said.

In addition, Prince Harry and Meghan issued a statement that contrasted to the Queen’s, saying, “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”

Looking back, Markle is glad she didn’t do too much homework on the royal family before meeting them for the first time; otherwise, she would have been anxious. “I think, thank God I hadn’t known a lot about the family. Thank God I hadn’t researched. I would’ve been so in my head about it,” she stated.

Meghan and Harry agreed to participate in the interview so that they could “speak their truth”

“No subject is off-limits,” Oprah said ahead of the two-hour special’s airing.

Harry said in a dramatic preview of their tell-all interview that his “biggest concern” was “history repeating itself,” a reference to his mother’s own struggles in the Firm.

As the host asked Meghan whether she was “silent, or silenced” by the Royal Family, Meghan cradled her baby bump.

Buckingham Palace was also accused of “perpetuating falsehoods” by the Duchess of Sussex.
