There will never be a “Jack Reacher 3,” which is probably for the best, but a TV series is in the works. The “Jack Reacher” series, based on Lee Child’s books, has been formally greenlit by Amazon Studios, Skydance Television, and Paramount Television Studios.

The Killing Floor, Childs’ first Jack Reacher novel, will serve as the basis for Season 1 of the new series.

Scorpion creator Nick Santora adapted Child’s book series about a war veteran who lives a nomadic life as a freelance investigator and problem solver as part of a script-to-series arrangement. Child has authored more than 20 novels featuring the character, which have sold over 100 million copies and been translated into 49 languages, so the program might be a tremendous hit for Amazon.

“Lee Child has created an incredible character and world; it will be the goal of every writer, producer, actor, executive and crew member to capture the essence of Mr. Child’s books – and luckily Lee has been there, and will continue to be there, to help guide us along the way in this series. He is the pulse of Reacher,” said Santora.

Child added, “It’s been great so far, but really, the fun starts here. By now I know these guys, and Reacher is in the perfect hands, believe me.”

“Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books series is a global phenomenon with one of entertainment’s most well-known heroes, and a perfect fit for Amazon Studios’ slate of bold, character-driven series,” said Jennifer Salke, president of Amazon Studios. “We look forward to expanding the of the Jack Reacher universe and bringing more thrilling action to our Amazon Prime Video audience.”

Santora, Child, Don Granger, Scott Sullivan, and Christopher McQuarrie will serve as executive producers for the series, while Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross will serve as executive producers.

Despite the fact that this is the first time the Jack Reacher brand has been adapted for television, two feature films starring Tom Cruise have been produced. Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuirrie directed Jack Reacher in 2012, and Cruise reprised the role in Edward Zwick’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016. The contrasts in Cruise’s physical appearance, notably the character’s height, had been criticized, but Child eventually agreed and opted to revive the franchise on television.

Jack Reacher will join a Prime Video lineup that includes The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Homecoming, Undone, Hanna, Goliath, Carnival Row, and Modern Love, as well as Jordan Peele’s Hunters, which will launch on February 21.
