After fans shared memes painting the Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown as homophobic, she deactivated her Twitter account.

It all started when the meme’s makers posted pictures of Brown with text that included homophobic remarks and epithets. The tweets received thousands of retweets and likes on the social media platform. The vicious hashtag “#TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown” was widely used, taking the cyberbullying a step further.

One of the tweets said, “I was in McDonald’s today and saw Millie Bobby Brown, went up to her and asked for a picture when she yelled “(expletive) you (homophobic slur)-looking homo walrus hoe burn in hell” and beat me up till I blacked out then left on her private jet, someone stop her #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown.”

Although the actress is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights and a proponent of GLAAD’s Together campaign, it is unclear why Brown was the target of internet harassers.

Brown made a name for herself in 2016 as Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things, a role that landed her nominations for both the Screen Actors Guild and Emmy awards as well as a deluge of positive reviews. The youngest person to ever appear on Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” list, Brown was one of a wave of youthful fashion stars. With over 16 million followers flocked to her every Instagram post, her social media activity and popularity mirrored her reputation as an icon.

Brown also manages the @Milliestopshate Twitter account, which is dedicated to combating bullying of all types. The account is active right now. Only Brown’s primary Twitter account was deactivated.

The young star’s admirers expressed their support for her when she left the website by commenting things like, “Wowwwwwww humanity really is the worst. Y’all bullied Millie Bobby Brown into deactivating her Twitter? Hope you feel real good about tearing down a 14-year-old (who’s more successful than you’ll ever be)” and “some people on this app are just so vile and unfunny.”

As of Thursday, Brown’s Instagram account was still up, but she has blocked comments. On National Best Friends Day six days earlier, she published a post on her account that included her Stranger Things family.

She captioned it, “I’m the luckiest person to call these people my best friends. I don’t have one best friend I have many and each of them are the most spectacular people that I love very much ❤️.”

On Thursday, Brown seemed to reply to her Twitter sabbatical on Instagram Stories by writing “Good vibes only” over a video. Since then, the post has been removed.

The internet has a long history of trash-talking famous people who are at the height of their fame. In the actress’ instance, she became a target because she is the last person who deserves to have a crosshair on her back, as comments to Brown’s deactivation seem to demonstrate.

An individual using the handle “Kelsey Fiona” reported that Millie Bobby Brown had torn off her headscarf at the airport in November 2017, just after the Stranger Things season two premiere. Many used KelsFiona’s Twitter picture, which did not include the clothing, to refute the charge. Fiona replied, “Because she [Brown] ripped it off me,” as Fiona questioned the veracity of the post and the fact that she was not wearing a scarf. The hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown appeared despite the suspension of the account.

For the third season of the Netflix series, Brown is expected to return.
