The pair’s remarkable sapphire-blue eyes, delicate bone structure, and almost spectrally pale skin make it clear they are father and daughter.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, on the other hand, hasn’t spoken to his only daughter, Abigail Hopkins, in almost two decades and recently stated that he doesn’t know or care if he’s a grandpa.

For nearly her entire life, he and Abigail, now a singer-songwriter and acting teacher, have had a strained and bitter relationship behind the scenes. Despite a brief reunion in the 1990s, when she appeared in two of Sir Anthony’s films — Shadowlands and The Remains Of The Day, both in 1993 — the two have remained fiercely estranged for the last two decades.

The actor was asked if he had grandkids in a 2018 interview.

Hopkins told Radio Times, “I don’t have an idea. People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘Get on with your life.’ People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other.”

When he was informed that that sounded cold, he said: “Well, it is cold. Because life is cold. It’s like John Osborne’s response when someone said to him, ‘Mr Osborne, your play is offensive,’ and he said, ‘Life is offensive.’”

He went on to say: “You don’t have to like your family. Children don’t like their fathers. You don’t have to love each other.”

Abigail, who resides in London, is expected to be very shocked by her father’s harsh remarks, according to friends, even after so many years of animosity. One says, ‘She is still very hurt by the whole thing. Her relationship with him — or the lack of it — has had a big impact on her life.’

‘Every time she tries to move on, she sees him — on film posters, on TV, on the sides of buses. He’s not like any other father. Even though they live on opposite sides of the Atlantic — [Sir Anthony has lived in Los Angeles since 1974] — he is impossible to escape. He has caused her a lot of pain.’

According to sources close to Hopkins, Abigail, now 52, is a “complex and difficult” subject for him.

Abigail has previously stated that she considered suicide as a kid due to her strained connection with her father.

“She’s a sweet person who tries her best but there’s a lot of sadness to her,” a source close to her told The Post. “It hasn’t been easy for her. It’s not something she likes to talk about but you can tell it’s an ongoing struggle.”

But what went wrong in their relationship?

Abigail’s suffering began terribly early in her life. She was born in 1969, the daughter of Sir Anthony and English actress Petronella Barker, whom he met on stage and married in 1966. Hopkins’s marriage began to show cracks after just two months, and news of Petronella’s pregnancy made him ‘so tense he was like a bottle of soda about to explode,’ according to Hopkins’s biographer Quentin Falk.

Anthony’s marriage to actress Petronella was already on the rocks, and the arrival of the kid didn’t help matters.

And, after achieving success on stage, he began spending a lot of time away from home, admitting that he turned to alcohol to deal with the increased workload.

His addiction quickly escalated, with allegations that he was consuming a bottle of tequila every day. This, he claims, is overblown. He has stated, “I was never falling-down-in-the-gutter drunk. Rather, I’d get boring, aggressive and stupid.’

Anthony left his wife and 14-month-old daughter in 1973 for Jenni Lynton, a Pinewood Studios secretary whom he met after she was dispatched to pick him up from the airport after he became so inebriated that he missed his trip.

He’s blamed his marital issues on a difficult childhood, where he was tormented and later diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. He’s been open about his battle with alcoholism — he’s been clean since 1975 – and his own passionate desire to succeed as an actor.
