Tom Cruise flew into action following a horrible tragedy on the set of his new film, Oblivion.

A British crew member had to be transported to the hospital after being crushed by a 50-stone weight.

The man, known only as David is currently receiving intense treatment.

“Tom stayed cool and swept straight into action. He didn’t take a back seat at all and made sure his Gulfstream V jet was ready to go in case it was needed. It was quick thinking,” a source said.

David was found unconscious and thought to be paralyzed, so compassionate Tom notified his private pilot, who prepared the star’s plane to carry David to a specialized spine injury center.

According to Contactmusic, the 49-year-old actor subsequently paid a visit to the bedridden crew member in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

It’s unknown if he’s been let go from the film, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Andrea Riseborough.

“Tom was great. He gave so much support to David and his family. It was a terrible accident but Tom had no obligation to put himself out like that,” the insider explained.

“It was quick thinking. David could have suffered permanent spinal injury, so it might have been vital he was flown to hospital.”

“It really meant a lot to the rest of the people on the set,” The source continued.

In Oblivion, Tom portrays a seasoned soldier dispatched to a distant planet to annihilate an alien race.

The sci-fi thriller is now in post-production.

It will be released next year.

It’s not the first time Tom has taken on the role of the good Samaritan.

Elisabeth Shue, Cruise’s co-star, was about to be killed by spinning chopper blades until he intervened.

A camera operator from the 1988 film “Cocktail” recounted a dramatic behind-the-scenes incident from the set in which Tom Cruise saved his co-star’s life by preventing her from walking into a whirling chopper blade.

The event was recently reported on Facebook by the film’s aerial camera operator Bill Bennett, and Cruise apparently confirmed the account to his “Mission: Impossible” director Christopher McQuarrie. The revelation comes on the heels of a story from the weekend in which Cruise was seen saving a cameraman from falling from a train during a stunt on the set of the latest “Mission: Impossible” film.

Bennett, who is now a renowned TV and commercial cinematographer, said the “close call” left the team “shaken up,” stressing how serious the incident was.

“I witnessed Tom Cruise save Elisabeth Shue’s life, for real,” he said.

“We were filming the scene from a helicopter, where Tom and Elisabeth are riding horses along the beach. We were shooting film, but I had a video recorder in the helicopter to record the camera’s video tap images.

“After a couple takes, the pilot would land the helicopter on the beach, and Tom and Elisabeth would come over to watch the shot recordings and get notes from the director. The only monitor was at my operating position in the left front seat of the helicopter.”

Bennett said that while the helicopter would only be parked for a few minutes, the pilot would leave the tail rotor going. The rear of the helicopter was off-limits since the blades appeared invisible while they spun, but “if you walk into it,” he warned, “it will kill you instantly.” However, after watching replay footage of a moment with Cruise, Shue “took off suddenly, running towards the back of the helicopter.”

“Tom is a pilot, rated in both airplanes and helicopters, and instantly saw the danger. He lunged after her, but only was able to grab her legs, tackling her to the ground,” Bennett said. “He rolled her over, dragging her at the same time, and you could see the momentary anger on her face while she was yelling ‘Why did you do that?’

“But by that time he is pointing at the tail rotor which is now a couple feet away, screaming at her that she almost died. At that point, she turned white, and he pulled her back towards the front of the helicopter and they walked away. All of us in the helicopter were quite shaken up by the close call, but there was nothing to be said. Tom had, in that instant, truly saved her life.”

His Tropic Thunder co-star, comedian Bill Hader, claimed last week that the actor guided him through a panic attack and completed two days’ worth of work in 45 minutes so Bill could return home to his wife and children following a bomb threat in their hometown.
