The first trailer for C’mon C’mon, a heartwarming new film starring Joaquin Phoenix, has been released by A24.

Beautiful black-and-white pictures and narration from Phoenix as he reads from a book are included in the teaser. This is Phoenix’s first picture following his Academy Award-winning performance in Joker.

C’mon C’mon is directed by Mike Mills, who previously directed 20th Century Women and Beginners. It recounts the tale of a guy portrayed by Phoenix who is left to care for his little nephew, who is played by Woody Norman in his debut feature film performance. The trailer promises a poignant narrative of an uncle and nephew who build a deep relationship throughout their time together, with a stark black-and-white design.

Phoenix’s Johnny reads, “To visit planet Earth you’ll have been born as a human child. At first, you’ll have to learn how to use your human body, to use your arms and legs. To make sounds, to form words. There’ll be so much for you to learn, and so much for you to feel. Sadness, joy, disappointment and wonder.”

“Over the years you’ll try to make sense of that happy, sad, full, always-shifting life you are in. And when the time comes to return to your star, it may be hard to say goodbye to that strangely beautiful world,” Johnny says, pausing before adding, “Damn this book.””

Johnny is reading to Jesse aloud, his voice providing a backdrop to a montage of the two together. “You’re crying!” Jesse exclaims as Johnny reaches the end of the passage. “No, I’m not,” Johnny protests. We might end up crying, though – A24 describes this as director Mike Mills’ “most soulful movie yet.”

Gaby Hoffman, Molly Webster, Jaboukie Young-White, and Scoot McNairy will join Phoenix and Norman on the show. Over Labor Day Weekend, C’mon C’mon had its international debut at the Telluride Film Festival.

The film will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 4, but no date for a wide distribution has been scheduled.
