Stevie Wonder is a legendary musician who has impacted many genres of music with his works.

He has been honored with 22 Grammy Awards and is widely recognized as a musical pioneer, particularly for his innovative use of synthesizers.

Wonder was born on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Lula Mae Hardaway and Calvin Judkins.

Unfortunately, he was born six weeks premature and had to be kept in an incubator, leading to a condition known as Retinopathy of Prematurity, which resulted in his blindness.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Wonder shared the story of his condition and how it occurred due to the high levels of oxygen he received in the incubator.

He was quoted saying, “I was premature.

My doctor didn’t know what’s known now about the right amount of oxygen, so I was given too much and an area of my eyes was destroyed.”

He further added that he did not hold any anger towards the doctor, who had no intention of harming him.

Wonder also spoke highly of his mother and the role she played in his life.

He stated, “She lived during a time when things were particularly difficult for a woman in her circumstances.

“I used to say that if something happened to my mother, I wanted to die with her.

“That’s because I loved her so much.

“I want to live so I can carry out the essence of what she has shown me: kindness and goodness.”

Wonder’s passion for music was evident from a young age, with him teaching himself to play the harmonica at the age of five and the drums at the age of eight.

He honed his musical skills by listening to the radio and then trying to replicate the rhythm.

At the age of ten, he had already learned how to play the piano, harmonica, and drums.

Wonder’s music career took off when he was just 11 years old and signed to Motown’s Tamla label after impressing Berry Gordy, the CEO of Motown.

Over the years, Wonder has been the subject of numerous rumors regarding his blindness, with many people speculating that he may be able to see.

This speculation was fueled by instances like when he caught a mic stand dropped by Paul McCartney while performing ‘Hey Jude’ at the White House.

Shaquille O’Neal also spoke about how Wonder noticed him while he stood silently near him.

Lionel Richie also stated that he believed Wonder could see, while Anthony Anderson challenged Wonder to a charity free-throw and lost.

P. Diddy once said that Wonder was able to describe an outfit he had had.

However, Wonder has not made any statement regarding the same and has maintained that he is indeed blind.
