In just over two hours, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness managed to cram in a lot of amusing cameos, but can you believe there were even more planned? There were a lot of surprises left on the cutting room floor because the sequel was trimmed by 30 minutes before it was released. An MCU insider, for example, has stated that Ghost Rider and Deadpool were previously planned to appear in the film.

The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) unleashed her wrath in the film, which was a far cry from her appearance in Wandavision. Wanda didn’t think about the consequences of her actions, from chasing America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) to executing the Illuminati.

Doctor Strange and America Chavez were apprehended by the Illuminati, a secret group of Earth’s strong beings, while attempting to flee Earth-838. Reed Richards, Black Bolt, Captain Carter, Professor Charles Xavier, and Karl Mordo are all members of the Illuminati in this realm.

Except for the Earth’s Mordo, they were all slaughtered by Elizabeth Olsen’s rampaging witch as she tried everything she could to reclaim her children. Despite the fact that all of the new guest stars were killed off, it was still very exciting.

Ghost Rider, out of all the characters, appears to have been a member of the restricted secret group. Unfortunately, it appears that his part was cut—despite the fact that it was supposedly filmed.

On the most recent episode of The Weekly Planet podcast, insider James Clement shared an important nugget about the recently released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: It was rumored that Ghost Rider would appear in it. Not only was Ghost Rider meant to be a “Illuminati member,” but his cut scenes were actually “filmed,” despite being cut from the theatrical versions of the film:

“So somebody sent me a list of five characters that were going to be in this movie that were cut… I said [to my source],’ were any of these films?’ And this person said, ‘Filmed but ultimately cut from the theatrical version… Ghost Rider, [who was a] very interesting… member of the Illuminati… I guess [he] was [likely] going to fight Wanda and probably die…”

There’s no denying that fans adored the Illuminati members they saw, even if they were all quickly slain by the Scarlet Witch. Many fans, though, are likely to be conflicted right now. What a treat it would have been to finally see Ghost Rider in the MCU.

The character was last seen in Agents of SHIELD, in Robbie Reyes’ portrayal of the role. Unfortunately, the show’s canonicity is still up for question, so it’s unclear whether that version of the character will ever appear again.

Michael Fassbender’s Magneto was also among the eliminated appearances in the film, according to the same source. Given their previous comics relationship, it’s a real bummer to learn that he could have been a part of an MCU story—even if just briefly.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now showing in theaters all around the world. The sequel to the 2016 film Doctor Strange, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.
