Ricky Gervais has disclosed that he has begged the Golden Globes organizers not to approach him to host the ceremony again because he is unsure if he would accept.

In 2020, Gervais hosted the annual film and television awards presentation for the fifth time in 2020, after doing do in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016.

After being dropped by NBC due to allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity around the event, the Globes were held a bit differently this year, with no celebrities in attendance.

Ricky confessed to Ladbible during a press conference for After Life why he was stopping the series after the third and final installment, as well as why he’d leaving the awards presentation.

“It could be the Golden Globes could offer me £10m for 10 minutes work, you know, and I’d be an idiot, I’d be a liar, to say I wouldn’t consider it,” Gervais remarked.

“But at the moment, given I’ve done it five times, it got better and better for me – I enjoyed them all, but it got better – and I’m planning never to do it again.”

“I’ve asked them not to ask me because I can be persuaded, that’s true.

“You know, it’s not a principle but with [After Life], again, it seems odd to end it at its peak, everyone loves it, the money goes up.”

Gervais released a clip from his last performance at the Golden Globes on Monday (10 January). “The good old days,” he captioned.

“You say you’re woke but the companies you work for, I mean unbelievable – Apple, Amazon, Disney – if Isis started a streaming service, you’d call your agent,” said Gervais.

After a Los Angeles Times exposé revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the awards, has no black members, the ceremony has been dubbed racist.

In 2020, the 60-year-old comedian laughed about the charges, saying, “The Hollywood Foreign Press are all very racist,” before adding, “They can barely speak English.”

He went on to say, “Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories,” before adding, “This year, we were going to do an In Memoriam, but the list of people who died wasn’t diverse enough.

“No, it was mostly white people and I thought, nah, not on my watch. Maybe next year. Let’s see what happens.”

Ricky previously stated that he feels his stint hosting the awards presentation was so successful because people are tired of celebrities who “virtue signal.”

He told The Sun: ‘With all of the austerity and people struggling, they think “why are these people lecturing me? They’re going to an awards ceremony in a limo and are telling me to recycle?”
