Tom Holland, star of “Spider-Man,” is trading in his web-shooters for dancing shoes. On Sunday, the 25-year-old stated that he will play iconic actor, dancer, and singer Fred Astaire in a forthcoming Sony biopic.

After producer Amy Pascal told GQ that she was eyeing the actor to play the dance legend, the Spider-Man star confirmed the casting.

During an interview with the Associated Press at an event promoting the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Holland stated that he will fill the entertainer’s dancing shoes for the project, which is still in the early stages.

Holland told reporters, “The script came in a week ago. I haven’t read it yet; they haven’t given it to me.”

Holland is a well-known Marvel hero after appearing in three solo “Spider-Man” films and three “Avengers” flicks.

At an event in London on Sunday, the 25-year-old told the Associated Press, “Oh, I am playing Fred Astaire. Yeah, I am.”

Holland is “excited” about his part, but says he’ll need to work on his dancing.

“I’m going to dust off the old tap shoes and go back to Pineapple Dance Studios [in London] and start taking tap lessons,” he told Variety.

Holland remarked, “I’m quite a good tap dancer. It’s something I’ve done for a very, very long time so it’s something I’m sure I’ll be able to pick up.”

Holland did mention that Pascal had received the screenplay. “She FaceTimed me earlier. I was in the bath,” he said with a laugh. “And we had a lovely FaceTime, but I will be playing Fred Astaire.”

Astaire was widely recognized as cinema history’s finest dancer, and he performed in numerous classic Hollywood films such as Top Hat and Swing Time. His dancing collaboration with Ginger Rogers was also well-known.

In 1933’s “Flying Down to Rio,” studio RKO memorably coupled Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and the rest is history. His filmography includes the masterpieces “Top Hat,” “Funny Face,” and “Easter Parade.” (Holland is far younger than Astaire was when he first became famous – the dancer was in his early 30s when “Flying Down to Rio” was released.)

“No dancers ever reached a wider public,” dance writer Arlene Croce said in 1972, “and the stunning fact is that Astaire and Rogers, whose love scenes were their dances, became the most popular team the movies have ever known.”

Tom Holland initially demonstrated his dancing abilities in the West End production of “Billy Elliott the Musical” from 2008 to 2010, but perfecting Fred Astaire’s technique will be difficult.

“Fred Astaire does have a very particular style,” Holland explained. “Billy Elliot” was very much a kind of like scuffy boot kind of tap dancer, whereas [Astaire] is very elegant and graceful so I’ll probably have to learn how to do that. But it’s something I’m gonna practice, something I’m very excited for and I think it will be a fantastic film.”

Given Holland’s own career as a performer, the news that he will take on the character of the renowned song and dance man comes as no surprise.

Then there’s the now-viral video of Holland singing and dancing to a mix of “Singin’ in the Rain” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” on “Lip Sync Battle” in 2017. Sure, the song was Gene Kelly’s show-stopper in the 1952 musical, but it proved that Holland’s dancing prowess was indisputable.

Jamie Bell, who played Elliot in the 2000 film, is also due to act as the dancer in Fred & Ginger, a separate Amazon Studios production starring Margaret Qualley as Rogers.

Holland has played Spider-Man in six films to date, three of which were produced by Pascal: “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which will be released on December 17th. All of the others were directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo and were “Avengers” movies.
