Sean Penn and Leila George have called it quits one year after their romantic pandemic wedding.

Sean Penn’s love life starts a new chapter as he makes his directorial debut in a new film. He’s back on the market. The 61-year-old actor and his 29-year-old wife, Leila George, have divorced after little over a year of marriage and five years of dating. They have no children.

According to TMZ, George filed divorce papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday.

The cause of the separation is unknown, and no additional information has been disclosed at this time.

During an interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers a few days later, Penn confirmed the big news. “We did a COVID wedding,” the actor told Meyers, raising his left hand to show off his wedding band when questioned about the reports of their weddings. “By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom, we were at the house, my two children and her brother, and we did it that way.”

They met while working, especially when recording the audio version of the book ‘Bob Honey: Who Just Do Stuff.’

Irena Medavoy, the wife of Black Swan producer Mike Medavoy, congratulated him on Instagram in August of last year.

She wrote: “We are so happy for @leilageorge #seanpenn getting married. We love you. Thank you for being like family a son to mike we are over the moon to find your soulmate true partner @coreresponse true love that also changes the world for better

“You are meant to be together God Bless you both and the family you have joined. Introducing the Penn’s #marriage.”

“Happy Wedding lovebirds,” Josh Brolin, who co-starred with Sean in Milk and Gangster Squad, said on his Instagram Story. “Our salutations to a beautiful marriage. Sean and Leila.”

Sean will be divorcing for the third time. He was previously married to Robin Wright, the star of Forrest Gump and House of Cards, for 14 years until 2010.

After a period of being on-again, off-again, they reconnected in the beginning of 2020, according to a pal. “They got together and then they broke up, and Sean won her back. He realized he had made a mistake and when he felt he might lose her, he worked hard to get her back,” the insider explained.  They also stated that their time together in quarantine served to deepen their bond, and that they found newfound purpose working on humanitarian projects together, such as setting up COVID-19 testing stations across Los Angeles. “They got back together during COVID and became really close and got engaged a few months ago, early during quarantine,” they said.

Penn revealed in August 2020, after weeks of persistent rumors, that he had given Leila the “Yes, I want” and exhibited the gold alliance that had been exchanged. “We had a COVID wedding,” he explained, emphasizing that the relationship had followed all social distancing standards. One of the most notable aspects of the ceremony was that the officiant was not physically there, but rather was present through video conference. Only the actor’s two kids (Dylan and Hopper) and one of the bride’s brothers (he has two on his mother’s side and one on his father’s side) were there, making it a very private affair.

A snapshot of a sapphire band, which appeared to be the wedding ring, was among the images of the pair uploaded by friends.

Sean was previously married to Madonna, the music diva, from 1985 to 1989.

Sean and Robin, both 55, have two children, Dylan, 30, and Hopper, 27. Both of their children are models and actors.

Their first appearance on the red carpet was in 2016, and since then, the most of their media appearances have been for charity events.

Prior to his most recent marriage, Penn was in a relationship with Charlize Theron, a US actress, from late 2013 until 2015.

Leila, who is still in her twenties, is just a few months Sean’s daughter Dylan’s age.

The pair was last seen out in public together in August, when they went grocery shopping in Malibu.
