‘Eternals’ Is now the Lowest-Rated Film ever in the MCU

Eternals has become the lowest-rated MCU film yet on prominent review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, in an unexpected turn of events. It has a lower rating than films such as Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk.

As of Thursday afternoon, the picture had a 63 percent Fresh rating, approximately three points lower than the previous MCU record-holder, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. But it has since dropped even further, to 53%.

“Eternals,” which premieres Nov. 5, hasn’t yet been reviewed by every publication, which might have a huge impact on the ratings if dozens more reviews are added to the average. However, based on the current scores, “Eternals” has mixed reviews.

“An ambitious superhero epic that soars more often than it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing — and occasionally confounding — new directions,” says the critical consensus.

“It’s a long way from Frances McDormand in a van to the center of the MCU, and no mere mortal is stronger than a $20 billion franchise,” EW critic Leah Greenblatt wrote, “but Eternals still molds itself faithfully to Marvel form — the winky banter and convoluted origin myths, exotic scene-setting (London! Hiroshima! Ancient Babylon!) and clanging third-act showdowns.” However, she recognizes Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao’s “imprint” in the film’s “steady thrum of melancholy and its deeper, odder character arcs.”

Until now, the lowest-rated MCU films were Thor: The Dark World (66%), The Incredible Hulk (67%), and Iron Man 2 (72%); now, it appears that Eternals will take the unfortunate crown. It will also be the third MCU film not to receive a “fresh” rating from the review aggregator site.

The highest-rated film is 2018’s Black Panther, which received a 96 percent Fresh rating, followed by Avengers: Endgame (94 percent), Iron Man (94 percent), and Thor: Ragnarok (94 percent) (93 percent).

Only two “Rotten” properties exist in the MCU’s history: the severely poor Iron Fist (37%) from the Netflix era and the short-lived Inhumans program (11%) that is easily the worst thing the MCU has ever produced. Eternals is still a long way from achieving either of those goals.

The film “Eternals,” directed by Chloe Zhao, tells the story of a race of immortal creatures known as the Eternals who have covertly inhabited Earth for thousands of years. They were created by Celestials and have been entrusted with reuniting and fighting their evil opposites, the Deviants, in order to rescue the world.

The film has received plaudits for its visuals and scale, but it has also been panned for being bloated and overflowing with explanatory speech, among other things.

Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, and Lauren Ridloff star in the ensemble cast of Eternals. In a recent interview with Fandago, Oscar-winning filmmaker Zhao discussed Eternals and how the film may revolutionize the MCU.

“I think a big part of it is that audiences will be discovering the origin of the MCU through the mythology of the Celestials,” she said. “I think by the end of the film, we will have a new understanding of planet Earth’s relationship with the cosmos, and also with her own inhabitants. But in that sense, it would have a huge effect on the future of the MCU … The film is set after the Avengers brought back half of the population in the universe and on the planet. So, the way we look at an event like that is always, for us, it is seen as this huge ecological implication [if] something like that happened to our planet. So, between that ecological implication, and the sudden mysterious return of the Deviants, it’s time for the Eternals to get back to work.”

Meanwhile, the film premiered in the United Kingdom on Wednesday. Chan, Madden, Keoghan, Nanjiani, Jolie, Hayek, Ridloff, and director Zhao were among the cast members who made an appearance.
